🔥 Ignitability of products under a single flame — 20 mm propane flame for 15 s or 30 s applied to the surface or edge of a vertical 250 × 90 mm specimen, flame spread and ignition of the filter paper below the specimen, PN-EN ISO 11925-2
In short
Reaction-to-fire test: a small propane flame 20 mm high is applied at 45° to a vertically suspended product specimen — to the surface (40 mm above the bottom edge) or to the edge — for 15 s or 30 s, without additional irradiance, and it is observed whether the product ignites, how high the flame reaches and whether flaming droplets ignite the filter paper below the specimen. The test is performed according to PN-EN ISO 11925-2:2020-09 (wersja angielska; EN ISO 11925-2:2020, ISO 11925-2:2020 IDT); STATUS (state of the cards on 29 September 2026): PN-EN ISO 11925-2:2020-09 withdrawn 01-07-2026; current PN-EN ISO 11925-2:2026-07 (EN ISO 11925-2:2026). The procedure comprises 5 steps; it is used for: Construction products — ignitability in reaction-to-fire classification (12 laboratories; 8 with the mark "N" for notified activities under Regulation (EU) No 305/2011), Floor coverings, indoor sports surfaces, waterproofing and insulation products, shingles and bitumen sheets, Furnishing and decorative materials in railway rolling stock and non-metallic materials (AB 304, AB 369).

Overview
WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. We have a preview of ISO 11925-2:2020 (fourth edition) — from the foreword to clause 7.3.3.2.2; PN-EN ISO 11925-2:2020-09 introduces the text unchanged (IDT). Scope (Clause 1): a method for determining the ignitability of products by direct small-flame impingement under zero impressed irradiance, using vertically oriented specimens. Introduction: ignitability is assessed by measuring the spread of a small (match-sized) flame up the vertical surface after it has been applied to the surface or edge of the specimen for 15 s or 30 s; whether flaming droplets or particles are produced is decided by whether the filter paper below the specimen ignites. Foreword: the fourth edition replaced ISO 11925-2:2010 and incorporates corrigendum Cor1:2011. Definitions: essentially flat product (e.g. at least 50 % of a representative 250 × 250 mm square within a depth of 6 mm from a plane across the highest points, cracks up to 6.5 mm wide or 10 mm deep, together up to 30 % of the area), flaming droplets or particles (material separating from the specimen and igniting the filter paper), sustained flaming (persisting for more than 3 s).
APPARATUS AND SPECIMENS (Clauses 4–6 of the preview). Test room (23 ± 5) °C, relative humidity (50 ± 20) %. Combustion chamber of stainless steel with glazed doors, on 40 mm supports, ventilated through a box section in the base; air velocity in the chimney (0.7 ± 0.1) m/s with the burner lit and the hood on. Burner (vertical or tilted at 45°) on a plate moving along the chamber centreline, with a valve for adjusting the flame height; fuel — commercial propane of at least 95 % purity, gas pressure 10–50 kPa. Specimen holder of two U-shaped stainless steel frames (thickness (5 ± 1) mm), a separate holder and a "harp" of 0.2 mm wire for loose-fill materials (for which surface flame attack is sufficient). Distance from the underside of the specimen to the plate: (125 ± 10) mm for edge exposure and (85 ± 10) mm for surface exposure. Flame height 20 mm (from the burner edge to the yellow tip, checked before each specimen), a 16 mm spacer to the contact point on the edge and a cone-shaped 5 mm spacer from the surface; anemometer ±0.1 m/s; undyed filter paper (75 ± 15) g/m², ash below 0.1 %, in a 100 × 50 × 10 mm aluminium foil tray replaced after each test; a mirror to observe the reverse face of the specimen. Specimens (250 ± 2) × (90 ± 2) mm, cut with a template; up to 60 mm thick tested at full thickness, thicker ones cut down from the unexposed side to 60 mm; products that are not essentially flat are tested in end-use form (e.g. pipe insulation), in 250 mm lengths. For each exposure condition at least 6 specimens — 3 lengthwise and 3 crosswise; an asymmetric product first with 2 specimens on each face, then a full series on the critical face. Specimens and filter paper conditioned according to EN 13238.
PROCEDURE (Clause 7 of the preview). Flame application time — 15 s or 30 s, as required by the sponsor; the test time starts at flame application. Specimens are tested within 30 min of removal from conditioning; the exposed end of the specimen protrudes 30 mm from the frame; two pieces of filter paper are placed in the tray not more than 3 min before the test. The 20 mm flame is set with the burner vertical, then the burner is tilted to 45° and advanced to the contact point. Surface exposure: on the centreline of the specimen, 40 mm above the bottom edge. Edge exposure: for a thickness up to 3 mm — at the mid-point of the bottom edge, for more than 3 mm — at the centre of the width of the bottom edge, 1.5 mm behind the surface. Product standards may state which exposure to use.

The card of PN-EN ISO 11925-2:2026-07 (English version) has no "Wycofana" (withdrawn) header — this edition is CURRENT: published 01-07-2026, 40 pages, "Introduces: EN ISO 11925-2:2026 [IDT], ISO 11925-2:2026 [IDT]", ICS 13.220.50 and 13.220.99; its scope says the same as the scope of the 2020 edition. According to the foreword of the ISO/FDIS 11925-2 draft (vote 11 August – 6 October 2025) the fifth edition changes two things compared with the 2020 edition: it adds a note on the evaluation of the flame tip and revises all figures; whether the published text differs from the draft — WE DO NOT KNOW. The 2026-07 edition is not cited by any laboratory in the copy.

ALONGSIDE THIS STANDARD. Reaction-to-fire classification of construction products combines this test with other methods: the single burning item test (SBI) under PN-EN 13823 is in the scopes of 7 of these 12 laboratories (AB 008, AB 023, AB 053, AB 054, AB 1280, AB 1501, AB 1777), non-combustibility under EN ISO 1182 and gross heat of combustion under EN ISO 1716 — 8 each (AB 008, AB 011, AB 023, AB 054, AB 304, AB 1280, AB 1501, AB 1777), floorings under EN ISO 9239-1 — 10 of these 12. Ignitability without this standard, by other methods: upholstered furniture and mattresses (PN-EN 1021-1, PN-EN 1021-2, PN-EN 597-1, PN-EN 597-2, BS 5852 — among others AB 023, AB 029, AB 053, AB 304, AB 1501, AB 1897), protective clothing and flat textiles (PN-EN ISO 15025 — among others AB 029, AB 154, AB 1501), plastics (PN-EN 60695-11-10, UL 94 — among others AB 163, AB 369, AB 1280, AB 1501), cables (PN-EN 60332 series), toys (PN-EN 71-2), vehicle materials (ISO 3795, FMVSS 302 — among others AB 1501). A descriptive entry on classification under PN-EN 13501-1 is separate in the Knowledge Base.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. The preview ends at clause 7.3.3.2.2, so we do not give the additional series for multilayer products thicker than 10 mm (7.3.3.2.3), the duration of the test and the time of reading (7.4), the expression of results (Clause 8), the content of the report (Clause 9) or Annexes A–C (precision, products not essentially flat, perforated products). We also do not give classification thresholds — these belong to PN-EN 13501-1, not to this standard.
Method principle
A vertically suspended specimen (250 ± 2) × (90 ± 2) mm, placed in a combustion chamber with an air flow of (0.7 ± 0.1) m/s, is exposed to a 20 mm propane flame from a burner tilted at 45° — on the surface, 40 mm above the bottom edge, or on the edge — for 15 s or 30 s. Ignition, flame spread up the specimen and whether flaming droplets or particles ignite the filter paper in the tray below the specimen are observed; without additional irradiance (preview of ISO 11925-2:2020, up to 7.3.3.2.2).

Health and safety (OHS)
- The standard warns: fire tests are hazardous, toxic smoke and gases may be evolved; means of extinguishing are needed (hand water spray or an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen), and a smouldering specimen may have to be immersed in water
- SUBSTANTIVE NOTE: the standard does not give a reaction-to-fire class — classes are set under PN-EN 13501-1 (a separate Knowledge Base entry); when asking for classification, state the product standard and the required class
