Overview

WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. We have a sample extract of CISPR 22, fourth edition (2003-04) — from the cover to Table 5 (page 23): the foreword, the introduction, clauses 1–5 and the beginning of clause 6. PN-EN 55022:2011 introduces EN 55022:2010, which in turn introduces CISPR 22, sixth edition (2008), with modifications (MOD); we did not have the text of the 2008 edition, so all the figures below come from the 2003 edition. Scope (clause 1, summarized in the same way on the PKN card for the 2008 edition): the standard applies to ITE, gives procedures for measuring the level of spurious signals generated by ITE and limits in the frequency range from 9 kHz to 400 GHz for class A and class B equipment; no measurements need be performed at frequencies where no limits are specified; the aim is to establish uniform requirements, limits, methods of measurement, operating conditions and interpretation of results. Introduction: limits have been specified only in selected frequency bands, which is considered sufficient to protect broadcasting and telecommunications. ITE (3.1) is equipment whose primary function is entry, storage, display, retrieval, transmission, processing, switching or control of data and of telecommunication messages, with a rated supply voltage not exceeding 600 V — e.g. data processing equipment, office machines and telecommunication equipment; excluded is equipment whose primary function is radio transmission or reception, and equipment for which all disturbance requirements are specified in other IEC or CISPR publications. A telecommunication port (3.6) is a connection to multi-user networks (e.g. PSTN, ISDN, xDSL) and local area networks (e.g. Ethernet); ports interconnecting components of a system, such as RS-232, a parallel printer port, USB or IEEE 1394, are not telecommunication ports.

CLASSES AND LIMITS (clauses 4–6 of the 2003 edition). Class B — equipment intended primarily for use in the domestic environment (radio and television receivers may be used within 10 m), e.g. portable battery-powered equipment, terminals powered by a telecommunication network, personal computers with auxiliary equipment; class A — all other ITE that meets the class A limits but not the class B limits; its instructions must contain a warning that in a domestic environment the product may cause radio interference. Disturbance voltage at the mains terminals (Tables 1 and 2): class A — 79 dB(µV) quasi-peak and 66 dB(µV) average in the 0.15–0.50 MHz band and 73 and 60 dB(µV) in 0.50–30 MHz; class B — from 66 to 56 dB(µV) and from 56 to 46 dB(µV) in 0.15–0.50 MHz (decreasing linearly with the logarithm of the frequency), 56 and 46 dB(µV) in 0.5–5 MHz, 60 and 50 dB(µV) in 5–30 MHz. Common mode (asymmetric) disturbance at telecommunication ports in 0.15–30 MHz (Tables 3 and 4), in both bands: class A — voltage from 97 to 87 and 87 dB(µV) quasi-peak (from 84 to 74 and 74 dB(µV) average), current from 53 to 43 and 43 dB(µA) (from 40 to 30 and 30 dB(µA)); class B — voltage from 84 to 74 and 74 dB(µV) (from 74 to 64 and 64 dB(µV)), current from 40 to 30 and 30 dB(µA) (from 30 to 20 and 20 dB(µA)); the limits were derived for an impedance stabilization network (ISN) with a common mode impedance of 150 Ω (conversion factor 44 dB). Class A radiated disturbance at a distance of 10 m (Table 5): 40 dB(µV/m) quasi-peak in 30–230 MHz and 47 dB(µV/m) in 230–1000 MHz. At the transition frequency the lower limit applies; when the reading fluctuates close to the limit, it is observed for at least 15 s and the higher reading is recorded, ignoring isolated brief peaks; if the average limit is met with the quasi-peak detector, measurement with the average detector is not necessary.

PKN search (30 September 2026): under "PN-EN 55022" all editions from 1996 to 2011 with amendments carry the withdrawal label; under "PN-EN 55032" the current one is PN-EN 55032:2015-09 (EN 55032:2015, CISPR 32:2015 IDT) with amendments A11:2020-07 and A1:2021-05.

HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation-scope database, data loaded up to 17 September 2026, read on 30 September 2026). All notations of number 55022: 28 records at 10 laboratories; in the current PCA documents the number appears 34 times, because the cells list editions and amendments side by side (e.g. at AB 245 "PN-EN 55022:2011" and "/AC:2011", at AB 261 the 2011 edition with Ap1:2013-07 and the 2000 edition with A1, A2 and AC), and the copy splits the bilingual entries of AB 053 into more records than there are occurrences. "PN-EN 55022:2011" is written by 9 laboratories (AB 022, AB 197, AB 207, AB 245, AB 261, AB 295, AB 666, AB 693, AB 1132); AB 053 — only "EN 55022:2010"; AB 693 — both notations; AB 207 — "PN-EN 55022:2011 (CISPR 22:2008 EN 55022:2010+AC:2011)"; AB 261, in the entry for the disturbance voltage at telecommunication ports, cites the edition PN-EN 55022:2000 (item 9.6) with A1:2003, A2:2004 and AC:2005. The "Laboratories" tab looks for notations that BEGIN with "PN-EN 55022" and will show 9 of the 10 laboratories — checked with the tab's query on the production server labcoda.pl on 30 September 2026: 9; it will not show AB 053 (under "EN 55022" — 2: AB 053 and AB 693). Current scopes on the PCA website (read on 30 September 2026, issues from 30.12.2024 to 08.09.2026): all entries are in the issues in force, each of the 13 pairs of range limits from the copy appears in the current document and no entry is suspended.

EQUIPMENT TESTED AND MEASUREMENTS. Information technology and multimedia equipment (AB 245, AB 261, AB 295, AB 693), broadly described electrical and electronic equipment (AB 022, AB 053, AB 197, AB 666), fire alarm, intrusion alarm and access control systems (AB 207) and military equipment (AB 1132). Measured quantities: conducted disturbance voltage at the mains terminals (most often 9 kHz – 30 MHz), disturbance voltage at telecommunication ports (150 kHz – 30 MHz, at AB 261 from 9 kHz) and radiated disturbance field strength — 30–3000 MHz (AB 197), 1–6 GHz (AB 693), 30 MHz – 6 GHz in an anechoic chamber (AB 053, AB 1132 — a 3 m SAC), up to 18 GHz (AB 261), 9 kHz – 26.5 GHz (AB 666); AB 207 tests emission in a GTEM cell in the 150 kHz – 1 GHz band.

ALONGSIDE THIS STANDARD. Seven of the 10 laboratories also have PN-EN 55032 in their scope (AB 022, AB 053, AB 245, AB 261, AB 295, AB 666, AB 1132) — often in the same entry; AB 197, AB 207 and AB 693 do not have it. The same entries list the measurement method standards PN-EN 55016-2-1 and 55016-2-3, the product standards PN-EN 55011, PN-EN 55014-1 and PN-EN 55015 (as well as PN-EN 50561-1 — at AB 022 and AB 666 the 2013-12 edition, at AB 197 "PN-EN 50561-1:2013 clause 4 only" and "clause 7 only"), as well as the military documents NO-06-A500 (AB 666, AB 1132) and MIL-STD-461 (AB 1132); at AB 053 — ANSI C63.4-2014. PN-EN 55032, PN-EN 55011, PN-EN 55016-2-1 and PN-EN 55016-2-3 have separate Knowledge Base entries.

WHERE A SEEMINGLY CORRECT RESULT IS EASY TO GET. First — status: the standard has been withdrawn since 2015; a result according to it describes the requirements of a withdrawn document, and the successor named on the PKN card (PN-EN 50561-1) concerns only in-home PLC apparatus — the technical successor according to IEC is CISPR 32 (PN-EN 55032). Second — class: the class A and B limits differ by more than ten dB (e.g. 79 versus 66 dB(µV) quasi-peak at 0.15 MHz), so "complies" without the name of the class says nothing. Third — detector: the quasi-peak and average limits are two criteria; a result with one detector is complete only in the situation described in the standard (the average limit met with the quasi-peak detector). Fourth — telecommunication port: ports interconnecting components of a system (e.g. USB, RS-232) are not telecommunication ports, so the common mode disturbance measurement does not apply to them. Fifth — edition: the figures in this entry come from the 2003 edition; the 2008 edition (the basis of PN-EN 55022:2011) and the European modifications (MOD) may have changed them, and at AB 261 one entry still cites the 2000 edition.

WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. The extract of the 2003 edition ends at Table 5: we do not give the class B radiated disturbance limits (Table 6), requirements above 1 GHz, measurement conditions (clauses 7–10: interpretation of limits in series production, configuration and operation of the EUT, artificial mains network AMN, ISN, test site and antennas, measurement in the presence of high ambient signals, in situ testing) or annexes A–E; we do not know the changes introduced in the 2008 edition and in EN 55022:2010.

Method principle

ITE — in the configuration and operating mode specified in the standard — is tested by three kinds of measurement: the disturbance voltage at the mains terminals and the common mode disturbance at telecommunication ports (via an artificial mains network and an impedance stabilization network), and the radiated disturbance field strength at a specified distance; the results of the quasi-peak and average detectors are compared with the limits for class A or class B. The figures in this entry come from the 2003 edition of CISPR 22; we DO NOT GIVE the measurement conditions (clauses 8–10).
