Overview
WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. We have a preview of ISO 527-2:2012 (second edition) — the foreword and Clauses 1–11 with Table 1, without the annexes; PN-EN ISO 527-2:2012 introduces the text unchanged (IDT). Scope (Clause 1): test conditions for determining the tensile properties of moulding and extrusion plastics, based on the general principles of ISO 527-1; the methods are "selectively suitable" for rigid and semi-rigid thermoplastic moulding, extrusion and cast materials, including compounds filled and reinforced by, e.g., short fibres, small rods, plates or granules (not textile fibres — for these ISO 527-4 and ISO 527-5), for rigid and semi-rigid thermosetting moulding and cast materials and for thermotropic liquid crystal polymers; not for rigid cellular materials (ISO 1926) or flexible films and sheets thinner than 1 mm (ISO 527-3). Specimens are moulded to dimension or machined, cut or punched from injection- or compression-moulded plates; the multipurpose test specimen is preferred (ISO 20753). Foreword: the second edition replaced ISO 527-2:1993 and is a technical revision of it. For definitions, principle, number of specimens, conditioning, procedure and calculation the standard refers to ISO 527-1:2012.
APPARATUS AND SPECIMENS (Clauses 5–8 of the preview). Extensometer — with the multipurpose specimen a gauge length of 75 mm is preferred, 50 mm is acceptable for quality control or where specified; if strain is recorded on one side only, bending of the specimen must be excluded (note: a ±1 % accuracy of the modulus requires an elongation accuracy of ±1.5 µm with a 75 mm gauge length and ±1 µm with 50 mm). Note: for the modulus (1 mm/min, gauge length 75 mm, grips 115 mm) a strain recording frequency of at least 22 s⁻¹ would be appropriate. Specimens: type 1A dumb-bells (directly injection-moulded, also compression-moulded) and 1B (machined); at 4 mm thickness they are identical to specimens A and B of ISO 3167 (A1 and A2 of ISO 20753); for environmental exposure small type C specimens (CW) of ISO 20753 may be used. Dimensions from Table 1: overall length 170 mm (1A) and ≥ 150 mm (1B), narrow portion 80 ± 2 mm and 60.0 ± 0.5 mm, radius 24 ± 1 mm and 60 ± 0.5 mm, width at ends 20.0 ± 0.2 mm, width of narrow portion 10.0 ± 0.2 mm, preferred thickness 4.0 ± 0.2 mm, gauge length 75.0 ± 0.5 mm (1A) and 50.0 ± 0.5 mm (1B), distance between grips 115 ± 1 mm. Specimens are injection- or compression-moulded according to ISO 293, ISO 294-1, ISO 295 or ISO 10724-1 or machined according to ISO 2818; surfaces free from visible flaws, flash removed; reinforced specimens should not be machined to reduce their thickness unless absolutely necessary — specimens with machined surfaces do not give results comparable to non-machined ones. From plates and products with flow-induced orientation, specimens are cut parallel and perpendicular to the flow direction. The tensile modulus is determined at 1 mm/min for types 1A and 1B (about 1 % per minute); the report states the specimen type and test speed.
STATUS (state of the cards on 29 September 2026). Card of PN-EN ISO 527-2:2012 (Polish version): "withdrawn and replaced by PN-EN ISO 527-2:2025-12 - English version", published 09-12-2013, "Withdrawal date: 11-12-2025", 18 pages, PKN technical committee KT 141 (Plastics), ICS 83.080.01, "Introduces: EN ISO 527-2:2012 [IDT], ISO 527-2:2012 [IDT]", "Supersedes: PN-EN ISO 527-2:1998 - Polish version". The card of PN-EN ISO 527-2:2025-12 (English version) has no "Wycofana" (withdrawn) header — it is CURRENT: published 11-12-2025, 22 pages, price group L, "Introduces: EN ISO 527-2:2025 [IDT], ISO 527-2:2025 [IDT]", supersedes the 2012 edition (Polish, English and German versions) and correction PN-EN ISO 527-2:2012/Ap1:2013-09. The scope on this card (clauses 1.1–1.3) repeats the scope of the 2012 edition, adding that materials are tested at the preferred thickness and specimens machined from products at their moulded thickness, and referring to ISO 527-1:2019. Of the 2025 edition we have only the table of contents (preview of ISO/PRF 527-2): in it the number of specimens is a separate Clause 7, Annex A on small specimens is normative and Annex B on precision informative; we know no other differences.
HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation scope database, data up to 17 September 2026, read on 28 September 2026). All records of number 527-2: 15 entries at 13 laboratories. WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. For principle, number of specimens, conditioning, procedure and calculation the preview refers to ISO 527-1, whose text we do not repeat here; we do not give the annexes (small specimens, precision) or Figure 1. We did not have the text of the 2025 edition — apart from the scope on the card and the table of contents we do not know what it changed.
Method principle
The specimen — a type 1A (injection-moulded) or 1B (machined) dumb-bell, preferred thickness 4 mm — is stretched in a tensile-testing machine according to the general principles of ISO 527-1, with elongation measured by an extensometer with a 75 mm gauge length (50 mm acceptable); the tensile modulus is determined at 1 mm/min, the other properties (yield stress, tensile strength, stress and strain at break) at speeds according to ISO 527-1. Part 2 sets the specimens, their preparation, anisotropy and the extensometer (ISO 527-2:2012, Clauses 1–11).
