🔥 Total moisture of coke — heating in air at 120–200 °C to constant mass, gravimetric method; PN-ISO 579:2002 (ISO 579:1999), current ISO 579:2013
In short
Determination of total moisture in coke from hard coal: according to the PKN card, a specified mass of coke is heated in air at a temperature from 120 °C to 200 °C to constant mass, and the moisture is the percentage loss in mass. The test is performed according to PN-ISO 579:2002 (wersja polska; wprowadza ISO 579:1999 [IDT]); Ranges in accreditation (PCA, %): lower limits 0.1–1.0; upper 12.5–60.0 (widest: AB 079 1.0–60.0, AB 1449 0.1–40.0 — a cell shared with hard coal according to PN-ISO 589:2006 — and AB 103 1.0–40.0). The procedure comprises 4 steps; it is used for: Coke from hard coal — total moisture, gravimetric method; in the current accreditation scopes 10 laboratories, 13 entries, According to the scope of ISO 579:2013: blast-furnace coke, foundry coke and other high-temperature carbonization products, At AB 313 also petroleum coke (0.1–12.8 %), together with ISO 579:2013 — whether this falls within the scope of the standard, we do not decide.

Overview
WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. Scope from the PKN card of PN-ISO 579:2002 (read on 08.10.2026), in full (our translation): "A method for the determination of total moisture in coke from hard coal is given. A specified mass of coke is heated in an air atmosphere at a temperature from 120 degrees C to 200 degrees C and held at this temperature to constant mass. The percentage moisture content is calculated as the loss in mass of the coke" (no full stop on the card). Scope of the current edition ISO 579:2013 — the same text on the page of the standard in the ISO catalogue and in the evs.ee catalogue: "ISO 579:2013 specifies a method for determining the total moisture of coke. It can be used for the determination of moisture of blast-furnace coke, foundry coke and other high-temperature carbonization products." We did not have the text of either edition.
STATUS (as of 08.10.2026). PKN card: PN-ISO 579:2002 — Polish version, without the label "Withdrawn" and without a "Replaced by" field; title "Coke from hard coal -- Determination of total moisture content" (our translation), publication 17-05-2002, 5 pages, price group C, Mining Sector, KT 144 Coke and Processed Solid Fuels, "Introduces: ISO 579:1999 [IDT]", ICS 75.160.10. PKN search, term "ISO 579" (08.10.2026): 48 items, only this one with the number 579. Page of the standard in the ISO catalogue (08.10.2026): ISO 579:2013 — fourth edition, published on 06.05.2013, 3 pages, ISO/TC 27/SC 5, ICS 75.160.10; in the life cycle the previous edition ISO 579:1999 is marked as withdrawn; the systematic reviews ended with confirmation of the standard on 11.10.2018 and 30.09.2025. evs.ee catalogue: ISO 579:2013 in force since 06.05.2013, in the history ISO 579:1999. That is: the Polish standard is current in the PKN collection, but it adopts an edition that ISO replaced in 2013; PKN has not adopted the 2013 edition. What changed between the 1999 and 2013 editions we DO NOT KNOW — we did not have the texts.
HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation scope database and current PCA documents, read on 08.10.2026). Number ISO 579 appears in 13 records at 10 laboratories (apart from them, in the database copy the number 579 is borne only by PN-EN 579:2001 — degree of crosslinking of thermoplastics, AB 414 — i.e. another standard); in the current PCA documents (issues from 02.09.2025 to 22.09.2026) — in 13 entries at the same laboratories; none of them is suspended (no bold italics; the suspension of part of the scope of AB 103 from 18.02.2026 does not cover this entry). All the entries have the notation "PN-ISO 579:2002"; AB 103 and AB 313 (in both of its entries) give "ISO 579:2013" alongside it. In the same cell of reference documents there are also national standards: PN-80/G-04511 (AB 103, AB 300) and PN-G-04611:2020-06 (AB 300, AB 313, AB 1913 — at the last one "z wyłączeniem pkt. 4.4.2; 4.4.4" (excluding clauses 4.4.2; 4.4.4)). The "Laboratories" tab (term "PN-ISO 579", matching by the beginning of the record) shows 10 laboratories and 13 entries, i.e. all of them; the term does not pick up standards with other numbers.
WHAT THE LABORATORIES TEST (PCA documents). Quantity: total moisture content, gravimetric method — all entries. Subject: coke; AB 079 and AB 313 write "coke from hard coal", AB 103 — "coke and semi-coke"; AB 313 has a second entry for petroleum coke; AB 550 describes the methodology as total moisture "in coke" with a subject that also covers hard coal, brown coal and processed solid fuels. Ranges in %: 0.1–18.5 (AB 313, coke from hard coal) and 0.1–12.8 (AB 313, petroleum coke), 0.1–21.0 (AB 081), 0.1–30.0 (AB 1913), 0.5–12.5 (AB 687), 0.10–20.00 (AB 914), 1.0–20.0 (AB 550), 1.0–40.0 (AB 103), 1.0–60.0 (AB 079); AB 300 has three entries: 0.5–15.0, 0.1–18.0 and 0.1–25.0; at AB 1449 one methodology cell with the range 0.1–40.0 % covers hard coal, anthracite and carburizer (PN-ISO 589:2006, method B2) and coke (PN-ISO 579:2002). At eight of the ten laboratories the neighbouring entry is moisture in the analysis sample of coke — a different quantity according to other standards: PN-ISO 687:2005 (AB 079, AB 081, AB 300, AB 313, AB 687, AB 1913), PN-80/G-04511 clause 2.4.2 (AB 914) or PN-G-04611:2020-06 (AB 550).
WHERE A SEEMINGLY CORRECT RESULT IS EASY TO GET. First — two different moistures: total moisture (this standard) and moisture in the analysis sample (e.g. PN-ISO 687:2005) are different quantities determined according to different documents; in the scopes they stand next to each other, and one does not replace the other. Second — petroleum coke: the title of the Polish standard speaks of coke from hard coal, and the scope of ISO 579:2013 of coke, including blast-furnace coke, foundry coke and other high-temperature carbonization products; AB 313 applies PN-ISO 579:2002 together with ISO 579:2013 also to petroleum coke. Whether petroleum coke falls within the scope of ISO 579:2013 we DO NOT DECIDE — we did not have the text; it does not fall within the title of the Polish standard. Third — the edition: PN-ISO 579:2002 is ISO 579:1999, and ISO 579:2013 is the next edition; writing both in one cell (AB 103, AB 313) does not say according to which edition the moisture was determined. Fourth — several standards in one cell: PN-80/G-04511 and PN-G-04611:2020-06 (described in separate entries of this database) are documents other than PN-ISO 579, so the report should state according to which document the determination was made.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We did not have the text of PN-ISO 579:2002 or of ISO 579:2013. We do not give the mass and particle size of the sample, the vessels, the type of heating device, the working temperature within the range 120–200 °C, the constant mass criterion, the formula, the precision or the content of the report; nor do we know what changed between the 1999 and 2013 editions.
Method principle
According to the scope from the PKN card: a specified mass of coke is heated in an air atmosphere at a temperature from 120 °C to 200 °C and held at this temperature to constant mass; the total moisture content in percent is calculated as the loss in mass of the coke. It is a gravimetric method — so all the entries in the accreditation scopes declare it. WE DO NOT GIVE the mass and particle size of the sample, the working temperature or the constant mass criterion: we did not have the text of the standard.
Applications
- Coke from hard coal — total moisture, gravimetric method; in the current accreditation scopes 10 laboratories, 13 entries
- According to the scope of ISO 579:2013: blast-furnace coke, foundry coke and other high-temperature carbonization products
- At AB 313 also petroleum coke (0.1–12.8 %), together with ISO 579:2013 — whether this falls within the scope of the standard, we do not decide
