Overview

WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. Scope from the PKN card, in full: "The subject of the standard is the determination of carbon tetrachloride in workplace air by the methods: a) gas chromatography without sample enrichment, b) gas chromatography with sample enrichment. The methods are used for determining the concentration of carbon tetrachloride vapours in workplace air when inspecting sanitary and hygienic conditions. These methods should not be used in the presence of substances with the same retention time as carbon tetrachloride." (our translation). The card gives neither the sampling or enrichment method, the detector nor the lowest determinable concentration. We did not have the text of the standard (4 pages); the CIOP index of methods from 2000–2017 lists no article on carbon tetrachloride (searched on 05.10.2026).

NDS VALUES (list in the annex to the regulation of 26 March 2026, Journal of Laws 2026 item 447). Item 510: "Carbon tetrachloride [56-23-5]" — NDS 6.4 mg/m³ (1 ppm), NDSCh 32 mg/m³ (5 ppm), "skin" notation.

STATUS (card as of 05.10.2026). The card of PN-Z-04074-02:1977 (Polish version) carries the heading "Withdrawn": published 16-12-1977, withdrawal date 27-11-2012, 4 pages, price group B, Health, Environment and Medicine Sector, KT 159 Chemical and Dust Hazards in the Working Environment, ICS 13.040.30; the card names no replacing standard. The PKN search for "PN-Z-04074" (05.10.2026) shows four items — 04074:1961 (rapid method, replaced by 04074-01:1975), 04074-00:1975 (general provisions), 04074-01:1975 (colorimetric method) and 04074-02:1977 — all labelled "Withdrawn". The term "czterochlorku" returns the same four standards, the systematic term "tetrachlorometanu" only two standards on water and waste water (PN-C-04549-1 and -2), and among the first 50 results for "tetrachlorku węgla" the only standards on this substance are the sheets of the 04074 series.

HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation scope database, data load up to 17.09.2026, read on 05.10.2026). The number 04074-02 (with a hyphen or a full stop before the sheet number) appears in 2 records at 2 laboratories; in the current PCA documents (read on 03.10.2026; issues of 24.11.2025 and 22.07.2026 — both issued after the withdrawal of the standard) — in 2 rows at the same laboratories; a search of all PCA documents downloaded from the BIP found no laboratories outside the database copy; none of these items is suspended, and no document repeats pages. Forms: "PN-Z-04074-02:1977" — AB 562 (next to document PB_42 edition 5 of 2022-08-16); "PN-77/Z-04074.02" — AB 746. The "Laboratories" tab: "PN-Z-04074-02" — 1 laboratory, "PN-77/Z-04074.02" — 1, the same in the copy and on the labcoda.pl production server (tab queries on 05.10.2026).

WHAT THE LABORATORIES TEST (database copy and PCA documents). AB 562 — working environment, air: concentration of carbon tetrachloride 5–4000 mg/m³; AB 746 — air samples collected into sorbent tubes: concentration and content of carbon tetrachloride 0.312–64 mg/m³ (0.049–10 ppm; 0.0050–2.0 mg per sample). Technique: gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection (GC-FID) — both laboratories.

WHERE A SEEMINGLY CORRECT RESULT IS EASY TO GET. First — status: the standard has been withdrawn since 27-11-2012, and both laboratories have it in scopes issued in 2025–2026; the reviewed PKN results show no current standard for this substance at workplaces. Second — which of the two methods: the standard contains a method without and one with sample enrichment; AB 746 describes samples collected into sorbent tubes, AB 562 does not give the sampling method — the report should state the method. Third — bottom limit: AB 562 starts its range at 5 mg/m³, while the NDS is 6.4 mg/m³ — for results below 5 mg/m³ the assessment against the NDS falls outside this laboratory's accredited range; the card gives no limit of quantification for the standard. Fourth — interference: the card stipulates that the methods are not used in the presence of substances with the same retention time. Fifth — skin: the NDS has the "skin" notation, and a measurement in air does not cover absorption through the skin.

WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We did not have the text of the standard — we do not give the sampling or enrichment method, the sorbent, the solvent, the column, the detector, the chromatograph conditions, the limit of quantification or calculations. We do not claim that another standard has replaced PN-Z-04074-02:1977 — PKN names none.

Method principle

Carbon tetrachloride in workplace air is determined by one of two gas chromatography methods — without or with sample enrichment; the methods are not used in the presence of substances with the same retention time (PKN card). The result in mg/m³ is compared with the NDS of 6.4 mg/m³ and the NDSCh of 32 mg/m³ (Journal of Laws 2026 item 447). The standard is withdrawn (27-11-2012); WE DO NOT GIVE details — we did not have the text of the standard.

Frequently asked questions

Which standard describes this test?

The test is performed according to PN-Z-04074-02:1977 — “Air purity protection — Tests for carbon tetrachloride content — Determination of carbon tetrachloride at workplaces by gas chromatography”.

How does this method work?

Carbon tetrachloride in workplace air is determined by one of two gas chromatography methods — without or with sample enrichment; the methods are not used in the presence of substances with the same retention time (PKN card). The result in mg/m³ is compared with the NDS of 6.

What is the measuring range and accuracy?

STATUS (card as of 05.10.2026): PN-Z-04074-02:1977 WITHDRAWN — withdrawal date 27-11-2012; the card names no replacing standard; the whole PN-Z-04074 series withdrawn; Edition (from the PKN card): PN-Z-04074-02:1977, Polish version; published 16-12-1977, 4 pages, KT 159 Chemical and Dust Hazards in the Working Environment, ICS 13.040.30; Methods (card): gas chromatography a) without sample enrichment, b) with sample enrichment; the card gives no limit of quantification; NDS / NDSCh (Journal of Laws 2026 item 447, item 510): 6.4 mg/m³ (1 ppm) / 32 mg/m³ (5 ppm); "skin" notation.

How long does the test take?

The procedure comprises 4 steps. The standard does not give a duration for every stage — the laboratory's own procedure decides.

What equipment is required?

Gas chromatograph, Air sampling set.

What safety precautions apply?

Carbon tetrachloride — "skin" notation in the NDS list; chemical laboratory safety rules; TECHNICAL NOTE: standard withdrawn on 27-11-2012 with no successor in the PKN catalogue; it contains two methods — the report should state which one was used.

Which laboratory can perform this test?

The test is performed by laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. On LabCoda you can find them by the standard number PN-Z-04074-02.
