Overview

Flash point is the lowest temperature at which vapors of the tested liquid form a mixture with air capable of ignition when exposed to an external ignition source under standardized test conditions. It is one of the most important safety parameters of petroleum products — it determines the classification of hazardous substances, storage and transport conditions in accordance with the ADR agreement.

The Pensky-Martens method uses a closed brass cup of standardized dimensions in which the sample is heated and stirred at a constant rate. At regular intervals, an ignition source (gas flame or electric spark) is introduced into the space above the liquid. The temperature at which vapor ignition occurs is recorded as the flash point.

Standard PN-EN ISO 2719 defines three procedures: A — for distillate fuels (diesel, kerosene, fuel oil), B — for residual fuels and used oils, C — for biodiesel. The method is used to classify fuels into three classes: Class I (up to 21°C), Class II (21–55°C), Class III (55–100°C). The test result is required in fuel quality certificates, safety data sheets and transport documentation.

Automatic flash point testers ensure repeatability of results and operator safety through integrated fire suppression systems and sealed measurement chambers. Results are corrected to normal pressure of 101.3 kPa.

Method principle

The sample is placed in a brass cup closed with a lid containing an ignition mechanism. The sample is heated at a constant rate (5–6°C/min initially, then 1–1.6°C/min near the expected flash point) while stirring at 90–120 rpm (procedure A) or 250±10 rpm (procedure B). At 2°C intervals, an ignition source is introduced into the space above the liquid surface. The temperature at which a distinct flash is observed spreading across the sample surface is recorded as the flash point. The result is corrected for current barometric pressure.

Step-by-step procedure

1. Sample preparation

Mix sample thoroughly. If it contains water, dehydrate by drying over anhydrous sodium sulfate or filtration. Bring sample to temp. at least 18°C below expected flash point.

2. Apparatus preparation

Thoroughly wash cup and lid with solvent (toluene, acetone) and dry. Mount cup in apparatus. Check proper operation of ignition mechanism and thermometer.

3. Cup filling

Fill cup with sample to level mark (75 mL). Avoid spilling on external walls. Close with lid.

4. Initial heating

Heat sample at 5–6°C/min while stirring at 90–120 rpm (procedure A) until temp. 23°C below expected flash point.

5. Final heating with testing

Reduce heating rate to 1–1.6°C/min. Every 2°C stop stirrer, open shutter and introduce ignition source for 1 second.

6. Flash observation

Observe whether a distinct flash occurs on sample surface. Do not confuse with blue halo around test flame — this is not flash.

7. Result recording

Record temperature at which first distinct flash was observed. Record current barometric pressure.

8. Barometric correction

Correct result using formula: Tf(corr) = Tf + 0.25 × (101.3 - p), where p is barometric pressure in kPa.

9. Repeat determination

Perform second determination on fresh sample in clean cup. Results should agree within repeatability limits (±2°C for procedure A).

10. Apparatus cleaning

After completion, cool cup, empty, wash with solvent and dry. Check condition of ignition mechanism.
