🔥 Ash content of hard coal, lignite and coke — ashing and weighing; since amendment Az1:2002 without slow ashing, PN-G-04512
In short
Determination of the ash content of solid fuels by the gravimetric method: according to the card of the 1980 edition, the standard gave the procedure for slow and rapid ashing, and amendment Az1:2002 deleted slow ashing and renumbered the following clauses. The test is performed according to PN-G-04512:1980 (wersja polska) ze zmianą PN-G-04512:1980/Az1:2002; Ash ranges: from (0.1 – 50.0) % (AB 081) to (1.20 - 82.9) % (AB 1948); coke (0.7 – 15.0) % (AB 300); furnace waste (35.0 – 90.0) % (AB 081). The procedure comprises 3 steps; it is used for: Hard coal — in the scopes of 13 laboratories; lignite, coke, semi-coke and processed solid fuels — AB 081, AB 103, AB 300, AB 313, Furnace waste ex 20 01 99 (ash from households) — AB 081.

Overview
WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. The scope from the PKN card of the 1980 edition, quoted in full: "The principle of the method, the type of apparatus and instruments, the procedure of the determination for slow and rapid ashing, the calculation and the permissible differences between results of determinations are given". The scope from the card of amendment PN-G-04512:1980/Az1:2002, quoted in full: "Clause 2.4.1 Slow ashing has been deleted and the numbering of the remaining clauses changed accordingly" (our translations of the Polish cards). After the amendment the standard therefore keeps one procedure — rapid ashing. The cards give neither the ashing temperature and time, nor the sample mass, the type of dishes and furnace, or the permissible differences.
STATUS (state of the cards on 29 September 2026). Card of PN-G-04512:1980 (Polish version): header "Wycofana" (withdrawn), published 10-11-1980, "Withdrawal date: 04-06-2014", 4 pages, price group B, Mining Sector, PKN technical committee KT 220 (Natural Solid Fuels), ICS 75.160.10, "Supersedes: PN-G-04512:1972 - Polish version", "Additional elements: PN-G-04512:1980/Az1:2002"; there is no "Replaced by" field. Card of amendment PN-G-04512:1980/Az1:2002: header "Wycofany" (withdrawn), published 18-12-2002, "Withdrawal date: 04-06-2014", 1 page, price group A, KT 220. The PKN search for "PN-G-04512" (29 September 2026) shows the 1980 edition (labelled withdrawn), the 1972 and 1964 editions (each replaced by the next) and amendment Az1:2002; we did NOT ESTABLISH a successor.
HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation scope database, data up to 17 September 2026, read on 28 September 2026). All records of number 04512: 19 entries at 13 laboratories (AB 300 — five entries, AB 081 and AB 313 — two each). All cite the standard together with amendment Az1:2002, in the forms "PN-80/G-04512+Az1:2002" (also "+AZ1", "+ Az1"), "PN-80/G-04512 | PN-80/G-04512/Az1:2002" (AB 300) and "PN-G-04512:1980/Az1:2002" (AB 081, for waste). Clauses: "clause 2.4.1" — AB 412, AB 506, AB 914 and AB 1383, "excluding clause 2.4.2" — AB 883. Because the amendment renumbered the clauses, the same number means something different in the 1980 edition and after the amendment — which procedure these records refer to cannot be established without the text of the standard. The "Laboratories" tab searches for records BEGINNING with "PN-80/G-04512" and will show all 13 laboratories — checked with the tab query on the labcoda.pl production server on 29 September 2026: 13; under "PN-G-04512" — 1 (AB 081). Current scopes on the PCA website (read on 29 September 2026, issues from 29 November 2024 to 8 September 2026): all entries stand in the valid issues, every pair of range limits from the copy appears in the current document and no entry is suspended (in the scope of AB 103 the footnote on suspension concerns other entries).
TEST ITEM, TECHNIQUE AND RANGES. Hard coal — all 13 laboratories (AB 081 and AB 103 within the wider item "solid fuels": hard coal and lignite, coke — at AB 103 also semi-coke — and processed solid fuels); coke — also AB 300 and AB 313; furnace waste with code ex 20 01 99 (ash from households) — AB 081, (35.0 – 90.0) %. Technique: gravimetric method. Ash content ranges in percent (excluding waste): lower limits from 0.1 (AB 081) and 0.5 (AB 103, AB 300) to 8.0 (AB 506); upper limits from 15.0 (coke, AB 300) and 18.0 (coke, AB 313) through 20.0 (AB 300) and 35.0–50.0 (most) to 69.1 (AB 313), 80.0 (AB 103) and 82.9 (AB 1948).
ALONGSIDE THIS STANDARD. PN-ISO 1171:2002 stands in the same entry at 8 of the 13 laboratories (AB 081, AB 103, AB 300 for coke, AB 313, AB 412, AB 490, AB 506, AB 1091), and in separate entries at AB 883, AB 914 and AB 1383; AB 103 and AB 313 add ISO 1171:2024, and AB 313 also ASTM D3174-12. Ash in solid fuels without this standard: PN-ISO 1171 — 52 laboratories in total (all for solid fuels; AB 1055 records "PN ISO1171:2002"), an automatic analyser under PN-G-04560:1998 (a separate Knowledge Base entry) — 33 (6 of them among these 13), solid biofuels under PN-EN ISO 18122 — 27, solid recovered fuels under PN-EN ISO 21656 — 19.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We did not have the text of the standard or of the amendment — PKN sells them (4 pages and 1 page). We do not give the ashing temperature and time, the sample mass and particle size, the type of dishes and furnace, the formula or the permissible differences between results, nor the content of clauses 2.4.1 and 2.4.2 named in the scopes.
Method principle
According to the PKN cards, the ash content of a solid fuel is determined gravimetrically — by ashing a sample and weighing the residue; the 1980 edition described slow and rapid ashing, and amendment Az1:2002 deleted slow ashing. We do NOT GIVE the ashing conditions — we did not have the text of the standard.
Applications
- Hard coal — in the scopes of 13 laboratories; lignite, coke, semi-coke and processed solid fuels — AB 081, AB 103, AB 300, AB 313
- Furnace waste ex 20 01 99 (ash from households) — AB 081
