Overview
WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. Scope from the PKN catalogue card of PN-EN IEC 60598-2-22:2022-11 (Polish version), in full (our translation): “This part of IEC 60598 specifies requirements for emergency luminaires for use with electrical lamps on emergency power supplies not exceeding 1 000 V. This document does not cover the effects of non-emergency voltage reductions on luminaires incorporating high pressure discharge lamps. This document gives general requirements for emergency lighting equipment. In this document the term “lamp”, which also includes “light source(s)” where appropriate, is still used”. We read the text in two samples: SIST EN IEC 60598-2-22:2022 (European pages: foreword, Annexes ZA, ZB, ZZ and the beginning of the IEC foreword) and IEC 60598-2-22:2021 from the cover to 22.7.1; we do not have the further clauses 22.7–22.21 (among others endurance and thermal tests, resistance to dust and moisture, insulation resistance, photometric data, changeover, high-temperature operation, chargers) or Annexes A–E — we know their titles from the table of contents.

HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation scope database, data up to 17.09.2026, read 02.10.2026). The number 60598-2-22 appears in 12 records of 6 laboratories: AB 003, AB 022, AB 044, AB 207, AB 1552, AB 1714. In the current scopes on the PCA website (read 02.10.2026, issues from 17.03.2023 to 08.09.2026) AB 003, AB 022 and AB 044 cite the 2022-11 edition (AB 044 also EN 60598-2-22:2014+A1:2020), AB 207 — three editions (2004+A2:2010, 2015-01 with corrigendum and 2022-11), and AB 1552 and AB 1714 — only the withdrawn 2015-01 edition. The “Laboratories” tab (“PN-EN IEC 60598-2-22”) shows 5 laboratories (without AB 1714); the form “PN-EN 60598-2-22” — 4 (AB 044, AB 207, AB 1552, AB 1714); “IEC 60598-2-22” — 2 (AB 003, AB 044) — checked with queries of the tab on the labcoda.pl production server on 02.10.2026.
WHAT THE LABORATORIES TEST (PCA entries). “Characteristics for assessing the functionality of an emergency lighting luminaire according to 22.4, 22.5, 22.6, 22.7…”, “Characteristics and properties for assessing safety of use”, “As for general-purpose luminaires, and:” (detailed items), durability of marking, dimensions, mechanical strength; photometry — luminous flux (0–50 000 lm), luminance, directional luminous intensity, luminous intensity distribution, luminous efficacy (AB 022, AB 207, AB 1714).
WHERE A SEEMINGLY CORRECT RESULT IS EASY TO GET. With photometry: the rated emergency flux is the flux after 60 s (0,5 s for high-risk task areas) maintained to the end of the duration — a measurement right after changeover or only at the start of operation does not verify the declaration (22.3.14); photometric tests are made on a separate luminaire (22.4). With LED: EBLF cannot be measured directly — the emergency flux of LED is calculated via EOFI or the ratio of currents (22.3.28, A1 card). With combined luminaires: parts for normal lighting only are tested according to another part of the series (22.4). With the edition: two laboratories have only the 2015-01 edition in their scope, withdrawn on 16-11-2022 — without requirements for lithium batteries and EDLC. With rest mode: the declared time in days is calculated according to IEC 61347-2-7/AMD2:2021 — without it, requirement 22.6.22 is not checked.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We do not have clauses 22.7.2–22.21 or Annexes A–E: construction requirements for the ESSS, charging and discharging times and conditions (among others Table 1 — voltage per cell at discharge), thermal and endurance tests, luminance measurement of signs (Annex C) and requirements for portable luminaires (Annex E) — so we give no values from those places.
Method principle
The emergency luminaire is tested according to the general requirements of PN-EN IEC 60598-1 supplemented by the requirements of this part: marking and instructions, construction, changeover to emergency supply on failure of the normal supply, operation in emergency mode for the rated duration (flux after 60 s or 0,5 s), charging and protection of the ESSS (battery, EDLC), high-temperature operation and — on a separate luminaire — photometric data are checked.
Applications
- Escape, high-risk task-area and standby lighting luminaires — self-contained and centrally supplied; 6 laboratories in PCA scopes
- Internally illuminated safety signs (escape route signs) — according to ISO 3864-1 and -4
- Conformity assessment under the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU (harmonized standard, Annex ZZ)
