Overview
WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. Scope from the PKN catalogue card of PN-EN ISO 6272-1:2011, in full (our translation of the Polish card text): “A method is described for assessing the resistance of a coating of paint, varnish or similar product to cracking or peeling from the substrate when it is subjected to deformation caused by a falling weight with a spherical indenter of 20 mm diameter, dropped under standard conditions”. We read the text of the standard in the preview of ISO 6272-1:2011 from the cover to clause 7.2 (pass/fail test — up to examination of the coating with a magnifier, page 5); we do not have clause 7.3 (classification test), Clause 8 (precision) or Clause 9 (test report).
ACCORDING TO THE TEXT OF ISO 6272-1:2011 (foreword, Clauses 1–7.2). The standard was prepared by ISO/TC 35/SC 9. The second edition replaces the first (2002); changes: in the description of the guide tube (4.1.3) and in Figure 1 the permissible clearance between tube and weight was changed, a Clause “Principle” was added, the test is no longer carried out at a specified relative humidity — humidity is recorded, but the test must be completed within a specified time after conditioning, additional test conditions (former Annex A) were incorporated into the test report. The ISO 6272 series: Part 1 — large-area indenter, Part 2 — small-area indenter. Scope (Clause 1): a method for assessing the resistance of a dry coating of paint, varnish or similar product to cracking or peeling from the substrate when deformed by a falling weight with a 20 mm spherical indenter under standard conditions; note: although “impact” is mentioned, what matters is that the apparatus produces rapid deformation rather than a true impact; use — as a pass/fail test (single height and mass, compliance with a specification) or a classification test (progressively increasing height and/or mass to the smallest at which the coating cracks or peels). Normative references: ISO 1513, ISO 1514 (panels), ISO 2808 (thickness), ISO 3270 (conditioning), ISO 13076 (lighting for visual assessment), ISO 15528 (sampling). Principle (Clause 3): the product is applied to suitable thin (usually metal) panels; after curing, a weight is dropped onto each panel from a height that deforms the coating and substrate, with the coated side towards the weight or away from it; by increasing the height, the point of failure is determined; coatings usually crack, which is better seen through a magnifier. Apparatus (Clause 4): a base of sufficient mass to support the die; a weight with a head in the form of a spherical segment of diameter (20 ± 0,3) mm and total mass (1000 ± 10) g or (2000 ± 20) g, unless otherwise agreed; a vertical guide tube with a millimetre scale (height above the panel), difference between the internal diameter of the tube and the external diameter of the weight (0,7 ± 0,2) mm, distance of the lower end of the tube from the panel not more than 45 mm; ring die with an internal diameter of (27 ± 0,3) mm, with a rounded inner edge (radius (0,9 ± 0,2) mm), height at least 20 mm; clamping sleeve with the same internal diameter at the bottom; spacers of various thicknesses to limit indentation depth; ×10 magnifier. Sampling (Clause 5): representative sample (for a system — of each product) according to ISO 15528, prepared according to ISO 1513. Panels (Clause 6): metal according to ISO 1514; each flat, undistorted, at least 0,25 mm thick (measured to 0,01 mm), of dimensions allowing at least five tests at points at least 40 mm apart and 20 mm from the edge; application and dry film thickness according to the manufacturer or by agreement (recorded in the report); drying or stoving and any ageing according to the manufacturer or by agreement; thickness in micrometres by one of the methods of ISO 2808, where possible at the test points; only panels whose thickness does not differ from the required thickness by more than 10 %. Procedure (7.1): conditioning for at least 16 h at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity (or under other ISO 3270 conditions by agreement); testing starts as soon as possible and is completed not later than 30 min after removing the panels; apparatus on a rigid base (concrete, steel, stone); test at (23 ± 2) °C or another agreed ISO 3270 temperature — the temperature and measured humidity are stated in the report. Pass/fail test (7.2): tube vertical, additional weights if required; release height according to the scale and locked; if necessary, spacers of a total thickness limiting the indentation to the agreed depth; panel on the die with the coated side up or down, held by the sleeve; release of the weight; the panel is removed and the coating is examined with a magnifier — this is where the part we read ends.

HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation scope database, load up to 17.09.2026, read on 02.10.2026). The number 6272-1 appears in 6 records at 6 laboratories: AB 023, AB 089, AB 128, AB 240, AB 369, AB 1424. In the current scopes on the PCA website (read on 02.10.2026, issues from 16.07.2025 to 01.07.2026) the number appears at all 6: with the year “2011” at AB 089, AB 240 and AB 1424, without a year at AB 023, AB 128 and AB 369. No row is set in bold italics. The “Laboratories” tab searches for entries STARTING WITH “PN-EN ISO 6272-1” and shows all 6 laboratories and 6 items — checked with the tab query on the labcoda.pl production server on 02.10.2026.
WHAT THE LABORATORIES TEST (items in the PCA scopes). Coatings, paint systems and metal products — “resistance to deformation, falling weight method, weight of 1 or 2 kg, height up to 1 m” (AB 023), “rapid-deformation tests (impact resistance)” (AB 089, AB 1424), “impact resistance (deformation), falling weight method” alongside the corporate standards PV 3966 and PV 3989 (AB 128), “falling-weight test” (AB 240), “weight of 1000 g” (AB 369); alongside cupping (PN-EN ISO 1520), gloss, flexibility (PN-EN ISO 1519) and hardness.
WHERE A SEEMINGLY CORRECT RESULT IS EASY TO GET. Apparatus: rapid deformation is what counts — the clearance in the guide tube (0,7 ± 0,2 mm) and the distance of the tube from the panel (≤ 45 mm) affect the speed and direction of the weight; apparatus on a soft base loses energy. Direction: a result with the coated side towards the weight and away from the weight are two different tests — which one was performed must be stated. Panel: a coating thickness differing by more than 10 % from the required thickness excludes the panel; a panel thinner than 0,25 mm or tests closer than 40 mm apart and 20 mm from the edge give a deformation different from that in the standard. Timing: since 2011 the test must be completed within 30 min of removal from conditioning. Result: the pass/fail test concerns only one height and mass — it is not a classification value. Assessment: cracks are examined with a ×10 magnifier.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We do not have clause 7.3 (classification test — steps of increasing height, number of tests), Clause 8 (precision) or Clause 9 (test report) — so we do not give the method of determining the limiting height or repeatability data.
Method principle
On a panel with a dry coating, placed on a 27 mm ring die and held by a sleeve, a weight with a 20 mm spherical indenter (1000 g or 2000 g) is dropped in a vertical guide tube from a set height; the coating is examined with a ×10 magnifier for cracking and peeling — in the classification test the height or mass is increased until the first failure.

Health and safety (OHS)
- Falling weight of 1–2 kg — risk of crushing fingers; hands outside the tube when releasing; the part of the standard we read contains no safety warnings
- SUBSTANTIVE NOTE: the result depends on the direction (coating towards the weight or away from it), mass and height — without these data it is not comparable; a pass/fail test does not replace the classification test
Frequently asked questions
Which standard describes this test?
The test is performed according to PN-EN ISO 6272-1:2011 (wersje angielska i polska; EN ISO 6272-1:2011 IDT, ISO 6272-1:2011 IDT) — “Paints and varnishes — Rapid-deformation (impact resistance) tests — Part 1: Falling-weight test, large-area indenter”.
How does this method work?
On a panel with a dry coating, placed on a 27 mm ring die and held by a sleeve, a weight with a 20 mm spherical indenter (1000 g or 2000 g) is dropped in a vertical guide tube from a set height; the coating is examined with a ×10 magnifier for cracking and peeling — in the classification test the height or mass is increased until the first failure.
What is the measuring range and accuracy?
