Overview

WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. We read the text of the standard in the iTeh sample of SIST EN 13049:2023 (text of EN 13049:2023, English): from the title page through the contents, European foreword and Clauses 1–3 to Clause 4 (apparatus) on page 4 inclusive. Outside the sample remain Clauses 5 (preparation of test specimen), 6 (test procedures), 7 (requirements and classification with Table 1 of drop heights) and 8 (test report). We therefore do not know the drop heights of the individual classes, the impact points or the assessment criteria after impact.

ACCORDING TO THE TEXT OF EN 13049:2023 (foreword, Clauses 1–4). The standard was prepared by CEN/TC 33 “Doors, windows, shutters, building hardware and curtain walling” (secretariat AFNOR); CEN approved it on 04.09.2023, and it superseded EN 13049:2003. According to the foreword the revision clarifies the test method and extends the scope to pedestrian doors, and does not affect existing test evidence of EN 13049:2003; main changes: in Clause 1 pedestrian doorsets were included, in Clause 5 the preparation of the test specimen was reviewed and clarified, in Clause 6 the test procedures were supplemented and clarified, in Clause 7 a drop height for class 0 was introduced in Table 1 and assessment procedures for internal pedestrian doorsets were added and clarified, in Clause 8 the description of the test specimen in the report was supplemented. Scope (1): test method, safety requirements and classification when determining the effect on a complete window or pedestrian doorset impacted with a soft and heavy body; any secondary moving sashes, casements, leaves, mullions, transoms, T-connectors or fixed lights which can be mounted internally to the main casements or sashes are similarly tested and evaluated for the classification of the complete product; the test applies to all types of infill of whatever materials including glass, but is not intended to classify the strength of the glass as infill — it is intended to assess the interactions between all components of a window with particular regard to safety in use and the ability of a doorset to keep glazed parts in place. Notes: the method is aimed at glazed pedestrian doorsets with injury risk, but can also be used for other doorsets if requested by the client; the test has been devised for all window and doorset types, configurations and materials; the classification of glass is given in EN 12600. Normative references (2): EN 1627:2021 (burglar resistance — requirements and classification), EN 1630:2021 (burglar resistance — test method for the determination of resistance to manual burglary attempts), EN 12519 (windows and doors terminology), EN 12600 (glass in building — pendulum test — impact test method and classification for flat glass). Terms (3): according to EN 1627:2021 and EN 12519. Apparatus (4): a rigid subframe into which the complete specimen is mounted using the fixing system and devices provided by the client; the impactor specified in EN 12600 is mounted on a horizontal or vertical axis, as appropriate for access to the impact point; in addition wires, pulleys, hooks and height-adjusting devices are needed, as specified in EN 12600.

STATUS (as of 03.10.2026). The PKN search (term “PN-EN 13049”, 03.10.2026) shows PN-EN 13049:2024-03 (English version, “Introduces: EN 13049:2023 [IDT]”, title “Windows and doors — Soft and heavy body impact — Test method, safety requirements and classification”) without a withdrawal note and the withdrawn PN-EN 13049:2004 (Polish version, title “Windows — …”, replaced by PN-EN 13049:2024-03) and PN-EN 13049:2003 (English version, replaced by PN-EN 13049:2004). In the iTeh catalogue (read on 03.10.2026) EN 13049:2023 has the status “Published”, stage 60.60 of 18.10.2023, and supersedes EN 13049:2003.

HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation scope database, load up to 17.09.2026, read on 03.10.2026). The number 13049 appears in 12 records at 6 laboratories: AB 014, AB 023 (7), AB 661, AB 1596, AB 1632, AB 1671. In the current PCA documents (read on 03.10.2026, issues from 16.07.2025 to 02.09.2026) the number appears in 12 rows of the same laboratories (AB 023 — 7, the others 1 each); in none of the six documents are page numbers repeated. The form “PN-EN 13049” without year, usually with the mark “N” (AB 014, AB 023, AB 1596; “N” — according to the scope legend a method used in notified activities under Regulation (EU) No 305/2011), “PN-EN 13049:2024-03” (AB 661, AB 1671) and “PN-EN 13049:2023” (AB 1632 — the year of the European standard; no such item exists in the PKN catalogue). Alongside stand among others PN-EN 14351-1 and PN-EN 14351-2 (product standards for windows and doors), PN-EN 949, PN-EN 16361, PN-EN 12600 and PN-EN 14019 (AB 014, AB 023), and at AB 023 one row with procedure PB LK-139 and EAD 020002-XX-0404 for balcony enclosures. Some AB 023 rows carry the mark “+” (according to the scope legend — tests at the laboratory premises and outside them). None of these items is suspended; the word “zawieszenia” in the AB 023 document refers to suspension and balancing systems of components, not to suspension of accreditation. The “Laboratories” tab (term “PN-EN 13049”) shows all 6 laboratories — checked with a tab query on the production server labcoda.pl on 03.10.2026.

WHAT THE LABORATORIES TEST (items in PCA). Windows, including balcony doors, roof windows, window-door assemblies (AB 023, AB 661, AB 1632, AB 1671), doors, doorsets, leaves and frames, internal and external, including fire-resistant, smoke-control, power-operated, with panic hardware and on escape routes (AB 014, AB 023), doors, windows and shutters (AB 1596), building elements — walls, curtain walls, roofs, roof coverings (AB 023), balcony, loggia and terrace enclosures (AB 023). Characteristic: resistance to soft and heavy body impact. Example ranges: body of mass 50 kg (AB 023), body of mass 30 kg or 50 kg in the row with PN-EN 949 and PN-EN 16361 (AB 023), impact pendulum method of mass 50 kg and pendulum lift up to 2,0 m, objects up to 2,00 × 2,50 m (AB 1632), object dimensions up to 6000 × 6500 mm (AB 1671) and up to 4000 × 2500 mm (AB 661). We did not read the impactor mass and lift height in the standard (they are in EN 12600 and in Clauses 6–7 of EN 13049), so we give the values from the scopes only as the laboratories' record.

WHERE A SEEMINGLY CORRECT RESULT IS EASY TO GET. With the specimen: the complete product is tested, including secondary sashes, mullions and fixed lights — they are similarly tested and evaluated for the classification of the complete product (1). With mounting: the fixing system and devices are provided by the client, and the subframe must be rigid (4). With assessment: the result is not a strength class of the glass — glass is classified according to EN 12600 (1, Note 3). With doors: the method is aimed at glazed doors with injury risk; other doors are tested at the client's request (1, Note 1). With the edition: the accreditation scopes contain forms without year and with the year 2023 or 2024-03; the foreword states that the 2023 revision does not affect results according to EN 13049:2003.

WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We did not read the preparation of the specimen, the impact points and sequence, the drop heights for the classes (Table 1), the criteria for meeting the safety requirements or the content of the report (Clauses 5–8). Nor do we give the design or mass of the impactor — the standard refers to EN 12600, which we did not read.

Method principle

A complete window or pedestrian doorset is mounted in a rigid subframe as in the building and struck with a soft and heavy impactor according to EN 12600, mounted on a horizontal or vertical axis and raised to a set height. The behaviour of the whole product — the interaction of sashes, mullions, infills and connections — is assessed with regard to safety in use and retention of glazed parts, and the result is assigned to a class; this method does not classify the strength of the glass itself.
