Overview

WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. EN 1628:2021 (clause 1) specifies a test method for the determination of resistance to static loading in order to assess the burglar resistance of pedestrian doorsets, windows, curtain walling, grilles and shutters. It applies to the opening functions: turning, tilting, folding, turn-tilting, top or bottom hung, sliding (horizontally and vertically), pivoted (horizontally and vertically), projecting and rolling, as well as to non-openable constructions. Burglar resistance has two aspects — resistance to forced operation and the ability of the product to remain fixed to the building; this method does NOT assess the fixing to the building (guidance is given by the manufacturer’s installation instructions, an example of their contents — EN 1627:2021, Annex A). It does not apply to walls and roofs, or to doors, gates and barriers whose main intended use is giving safe access for goods and vehicles in industrial, commercial or residential premises, covered by EN 13241:2003+A2:2016. The standard belongs to a series: EN 1627 (requirements and classification), EN 1629 (dynamic loading) and EN 1630 (manual burglary attempts; separate entry in this database). The “Scope” field of the PKN card of PN-EN 1628:2021-11 (English version, scope description in Polish), excerpt in our translation: “This document specifies a test method for the determination of the resistance to static loading in order to assess the burglar resistance of pedestrian doorsets, windows, curtain walling, grilles and shutters.”

APPARATUS (clause 4). Test rig: a rigid steel frame with movable supports — a force of 15 kN applied at any point normal to the plane of the frame shall not cause a deflection of more than 5 mm. Load applicators (hydraulic or similar) apply the loads progressively and without shock; hooks, straps in accordance with EN 12195-2:2000 with a tensile strength of at least 5 kN, pressure pads. Measuring equipment: display or recording of the force, a chronometer with seconds display, measurement of temperature and humidity, a calliper or depth gauge, an angle measuring instrument and three gap gauges: A — Ø 10 mm, B — Ø 25 mm, C — elliptical 250 mm × 150 mm. The sub-frame simulates the support of the product in the building: a metal tube of at least 120 × 120 × 5 mm or a timber frame of at least 100 × 70 mm, for groups 3 and 4 additionally a 40 × 40 × 3 mm tube and an 8 mm steel base plate. Tolerances: load ±5 %, dimensions from ±0,5 mm (< 20 mm) to ±3,0 mm (≥ 2000 mm), angle ±2°, time ±1 %, temperature ±2 °C, relative humidity ±5 %.

TEST SPECIMEN (clause 5). A complete, functioning product with frame, building hardware, guide rails, curtain, tube, roller box and accessories; for roller shutters additionally at least two specimens consisting of separate sections of guide rails 1 m long. Mounted in the sub-frame square and plumb, without twist or bend, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions; products installed in orientations other than vertical (e.g. roof lights) may be mounted vertically for this test (note to point 5.1). The same specimen may be used for the dynamic test in accordance with EN 1629 and for the pre-test in accordance with EN 1630, provided the damage will not affect its result. Glazing — with glass of the EN 356:1999 class corresponding to the class of the product in accordance with EN 1627:2021 (Table 1): RC 1 N, RC 1, RC 2 N and RC 2 — P4 A, RC 3 — P5 A, RC 4 — P6 B, RC 5 — P7 B, RC 6 — P8 B; the pane of the highest class, in use normally on the non-attack side, is placed on the attack side for the test. A result obtained with glass of a higher class does not carry over without further tests to products with glass of a lower class, because stronger glass stiffens the product. The specimen is stored for at least 8 h at 15–30 °C; during the tests it is closed and locked as declared by the manufacturer, and hardware that can be disengaged from the attack side without a key or tool is disengaged. Products of class 1 are additionally prepared: on the attack side all parts that can be unscrewed, dismounted or disassembled with the tools of tool set A1 of EN 1630:2021 (Annex A) are removed, without damaging them, within at most 3 min.

PROCEDURE (clause 6). In a room at 15–30 °C and 30–70 % relative humidity, the loads given in EN 1627:2021 (point 7.1) are applied in the order specified there and according to the scheme of Annex B. Glass breakage does not stop the test. The props have a nominal contact area of 100 mm × 50 mm. Group 1 (e.g. turning products) and group 2 (sliding and lift-and-slide products): F1 — each infill corner, pressure pad about 5 mm from the edge, in the direction to disassemble the infill retention system; F2 — the leaf corner if the nearest locking point is more than 350 mm from the corner; F3 — each locking point (main lock, bolts, hinges, hinge or dog bolts, fixings of fixed elements, bearings of sliding leaves, junctions of grille bars), with locking points less than 200 mm apart — a single point in the middle. Loads F1, F2 and F3 are applied without shock over 10–20 s, within 5° of perpendicular, and maintained for 8–12 s. The in-plane load F3.a (applied over at most 30 s, maintained until load F3 is removed) is used according to point 6.3.1.4 only in class 1N (procedures 6.3.3 and 6.3.5 refer to class 1); in group 2 in class 2 its value equals F3, and in group 1 from class 2 and in group 2 from class 3 it is omitted. Group 3 (roller shutters) has its own loading points: F1 — connection between guide rail and curtain, F1.1 — guide rail as a separate component, F2 — extraction of the bottom lath and curtain, F3 — lifting up of the curtain; group 4 is described in point 6.6. Annex C describes the test of dislocation of window hardware against the locking direction.

FAILURE CRITERION (point 6.4, groups 1 and 2). The product has failed if the appropriate gap gauge passes through any aperture — with or without the load: for loads F1 and F2 gauge B (Ø 25 mm), for F3 — gauge A (Ø 10 mm). The gauge must not apply additional load and may be passed through at any angle; passage through letter plates is not a failure.

EDITION. EN 1628:2021 (CEN/TC 33) superseded EN 1628:2011+A1:2015; changes according to the foreword: updated normative references and gap gauge C (Figure A.14) replacing gauge 3 (Figure A.13). In the iTeh catalogue (read on 28.10.2026) EN 1628:2021 has the status “Published” and the stage “9020 – Submission to 2 Year Review Enquiry”.

STATUS (PKN card as of 28.10.2026). HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation scope database refreshed from the production server on 27.10.2026 and current PCA documents). Number 1628 appears in 12 records at 6 Polish laboratories: AB 014, AB 023 (six entries), AB 035 (two), AB 661, AB 1054, AB 1596. In the current PCA documents of these laboratories the standard occurs 12 times in total — as many as in the copy; no entry is suspended. Notations: “PN-EN 1628:2021-11” (AB 035, AB 661, AB 1596 — here next to PN-EN 1627:2021-11 with an asterisk), “PN-EN 1628:2021” (AB 014) and “PN-EN 1628” without a year (AB 023, AB 1054). The “Laboratories” tab (“PN-EN 1628”) shows 8 laboratories: these 6 Polish ones and 2 Czech ones (query of the tab on labcoda.pl, 28.10.2026).

WHAT THE LABORATORIES TEST (database copy and PCA documents, complete entries). Doors and openable and non-openable windows — product group 1, classes RC2–RC4 (AB 014); building partitions with enhanced burglar resistance: windows, doors, curtain walling, gates, shutters — product group 1, classes 2 and 3 (AB 023), and in separate entries also doors and door assemblies of various kinds (among others sliding, swing, with panic hardware, on escape routes), grilles, windows (among others roof windows), curtain walling and shutters and blinds (AB 023); doors, windows and curtain walling as well as grilles and shutters — force 1,5–15 kN, classes RC2–RC6 (AB 035); building partitions with enhanced burglar resistance, classes RC2–RC6 (AB 1596); windows, doors and balcony doors (AB 1054); windows and doors up to 4000 mm wide and 2500 mm high, force 0–15 kN (AB 661).

WHERE A SEEMINGLY CORRECT RESULT IS EASY TO GET. First — glass: a test with glass of a higher class than intended for the product gives a result that must not be transferred to the version with weaker glass (stiffness). Second — hardware that can be disengaged without a key from the attack side must be disengaged; testing a product “locked with everything” overstates the resistance. Third — the gauge: B for F1 and F2, A for F3; a gauge pressed in adds load, and one not tried at various angles will miss a gap. Fourth — the rate: a load applied faster than in 10 s or maintained for less than 8 s is a different test. Fifth — fixing: the result says nothing about the anchoring of the product in the wall. Sixth — the load values are not in EN 1628 but in EN 1627:2021 (point 7.1): a test according to EN 1628 alone, without a class from EN 1627, has no criterion — which is why the scope entries state classes (RC2–RC4, RC2–RC6, “classes 2 and 3”), and AB 1596 cites PN-EN 1627:2021-11 alongside.

WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. The fragment of EN 1628:2021 we read ends at point 6.5.3.1. We do not give the load values (EN 1627:2021), the further course of the group 3 tests (from point 6.5.3.2) or the rules for group 4 (point 6.6), the figures of Annex A, the scheme of Annex B, the details of Annex C or the contents of the test report (clause 7). We did not check references to the standard in legislation.

Method principle

The complete product mounted in a rigid sub-frame is loaded with a load applicator at defined points — the infill corners (F1), the leaf corners (F2) and the locking points (F3, in class 1N also F3.a in the plane of the product) — with the loads from EN 1627, applied without shock over 10–20 s and maintained for 8–12 s; the product has failed if gap gauge B (Ø 25 mm) for F1 and F2 or A (Ø 10 mm) for F3 passes through any aperture (EN 1628:2021, clauses 4–6).

Frequently asked questions

Which standard describes this test?

The test is performed according to PN-EN 1628:2021-11 (wersja angielska; wprowadza EN 1628:2021 [IDT]) — “Pedestrian doorsets, windows, curtain walling, grilles and shutters — Burglar resistance — Test method for the determination of resistance under static loading”.

How does this method work?

The complete product mounted in a rigid sub-frame is loaded with a load applicator at defined points — the infill corners (F1), the leaf corners (F2) and the locking points (F3, in class 1N also F3.a in the plane of the product) — with the loads from EN 1627, applied without shock over 10–20 s and maintained for 8–12 s; the product has failed if gap gauge B (Ø 25 mm) for F1 and F2 or A (Ø 10 mm) for F3 passes through any aperture (EN 1628:2021, clauses 4–6).

What is the measuring range and accuracy?

STATUS (PKN card as of 28.10.2026): PN-EN 1628:2021-11 current (English version); replaced PN-EN 1628+A1:2016-02; Test rig (point 4.1): a 15 kN force at any point — frame deflection ≤ 5 mm; Gap gauges (point 4.6): A — Ø 10 mm, B — Ø 25 mm, C — elliptical 250 × 150 mm; Load application (point 6.3): applied over 10–20 s without shock, within 5° of perpendicular; maintained 8–12 s; F3.a ≤ 30 s.

How long does the test take?

The procedure comprises 4 steps. The standard does not give a duration for every stage — the laboratory's own procedure decides.

What equipment is required?

Test rig with sub-frame (points 4.1, 4.7), Load applicators with pressure pads, hooks and straps (points 4.2–4.5), Gap gauges A, B, C (point 4.6), Measurement of force, time, temperature and humidity, calliper, angle measuring instrument (point 4.6).

Where is this test used?

Doors, windows, curtain walling, grilles and shutters with enhanced burglar resistance — RC classification in accordance with EN 1627 (EN 1628:2021, clause 1); All opening functions (turning, tilting, sliding, pivoted, rolling) and non-openable constructions; Together with EN 1629 (dynamic loading) and EN 1630 (manual burglary attempts); In accreditation scopes: 6 Polish laboratories, classes RC2–RC6, force up to 15 kN.

What safety precautions apply?

TECHNICAL NOTE: a result with glass of a higher class does not carry over to a product with glass of a lower class without further tests; TECHNICAL NOTE: the method does not assess the fixing of the product to the building; Glass breakage does not stop the test — the standard allows adhesive film on the glass to protect the tester.

Which laboratory can perform this test?

The test is performed by laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. On LabCoda you can find them by the standard number PN-EN 1628.
