🌿 Vinyl acetate in workplace air — adsorption on activated carbon, extraction with carbon disulfide, gas chromatography, PN-Z-04178-02
In short
Determination of vinyl acetate in workplace air: according to the card, vinyl acetate vapours are adsorbed on activated carbon, extracted with carbon disulfide and the solution is analysed chromatographically; the limit of determination of the method is 2. The test is performed according to PN-Z-04178-02:1987 (wersja polska); Concentration ranges: from (0.10-333) mg/m³ (AB 1642) to (5 – 4000) mg/m³ (AB 562). The procedure comprises 5 steps; it is used for: Vinyl acetate in workplace air — exposure measurements in the scopes of 12 laboratories (NDS 10 mg/m³, NDSCh 30 mg/m³), Waste gases sampled on sorbent tubes (AB 940, AB 1168), ambient and indoor air (AB 1207).

Overview
WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. The scope from the PKN card, quoted in full: "The test method consists in the adsorption of vinyl acetate vapours on active [a word is missing here], their extraction with carbon disulfide and chromatographic analysis of the solution obtained. The limit of determination of the method is 2.5 mg in 1 cubic metre of air" (our translation of the Polish card; in the card's sentence a word is missing after "vinyl acetate" — the title and the laboratories' descriptions show that activated carbon is meant). The title speaks of gas chromatography "with sample enrichment". The card does not give the type of detector, the air volume, the flow rate, the separation conditions or the calibration procedure. This standard is sheet 02 of the series "Tests for vinyl acetate content". The index of methods published in the quarterly "Podstawy i Metody Oceny Środowiska Pracy" (Principles and Methods of Assessing the Working Environment) in 2000–2015 (CIOP-PIB) has no entry "vinyl acetate"; AB 300 cites for this substance an article from that quarterly (2007, No. 1(51), pp. 141–147), whose content we do not know.
LIMIT VALUES. According to the regulation of the Minister of Family, Labour and Social Policy of 26 March 2026 (Journal of Laws 2026, item 447, annex, item 443), for vinyl acetate [108-05-4] the NDS (8-hour value) is 10 mg/m³ and the NDSCh (short-term value) 30 mg/m³.
STATUS (state of the cards on 29 September 2026). Card of PN-Z-04178-02:1987 (Polish version): header "Wycofana" (withdrawn), published 06-10-1987, "Withdrawal date: 27-11-2012", 3 pages, price group B, Health, Environment and Medicine Sector, PKN technical committee KT 159 (Chemical and Dust Hazards in the Working Environment), ICS 13.040.30; there are no "Supersedes" and "Replaced by" fields. Sheet 01 of the series — PN-Z-04178-01:1987 "General provisions and scope of the standard" (scope from the card: "The subject and thematic scope of the standard were established, including the list of sheets of the standard") — was withdrawn earlier, on 29-11-2007 (KT 280 Air Quality, 1 page). The PKN search for "PN-Z-04178" (29 September 2026) shows only these two sheets, both labelled "Wycofana" (withdrawn); we did NOT ESTABLISH a successor.

ALONGSIDE THIS STANDARD. Vinyl acetate in workplace air without this standard is determined by 8 laboratories, under in-house procedures or publications: AB 300 (article in PiMOŚP 2007, No. 1(51), pp. 141–147, with instruction IN-59), AB 481 (TSO/PB-08), AB 647 (PB-14 — next to the entry with this standard), AB 719 (PA-14), AB 802 (PB-06/09), AB 849 (PB-29, (0.643 – 2480) mg/m³), AB 934 ("Normy, Procedury badawcze" — standards, test procedures; flexible scope) and AB 1854 (PN-Z-04231-02:1993 with instruction IR-23). WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We did not have the text of the standard — PKN sells it (3 pages). We do not give the air volume and flow rate, the type of tube, the volume of carbon disulfide, the column, the detector and the separation conditions, the calibration, the formula or the content of clause 8, which AB 940 excludes.

Health and safety (OHS)
- Carbon disulfide is extremely flammable and toxic — work in a fume hood, with no ignition sources; vinyl acetate is highly flammable
- SUBSTANTIVE NOTE: the limit of determination on the card (2.5 mg/m³) is higher than the lower range limits of most laboratories — when asking for the test, ask for the limit of quantification and the document under which the laboratory determined it
