Overview
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THIS STANDARD. PN-P-04613:1997 is a Polish standard of group P (textiles), without an EN or ISO element in its designation. PKN card (read on 06.11.2026): title "Tekstylia — Dzianiny i przędziny — Wyznaczanie masy liniowej i powierzchniowej" (Textiles — Knitted fabrics and stitch-bonded fabrics — Determination of linear and areal mass), Polish version, publication 11-02-1997, 4 pages, Consumer Products Sector, KT 26 Textile Products, ICS 59.080.30, "Replaces: PN-P-04613:1985 - Polish version"; the card has no "Adopts", "Directive" or "Mandate" fields. The "Scope" field of the card in full (our translation): "Four test methods for linear mass and five test methods for areal mass of knitted fabrics and stitch-bonded fabrics are given. The scope of application of the methods, the determination of non-conditioned and conditioned linear and areal mass, and correction factors are given. The test methods are described, giving for each of them the principle of determination, the measuring and auxiliary instruments used, the method of sampling and preparing the piece or specimen, the performance of determinations under specified conditions, the calculation of results and the test report". We did not have the text of the standard — we know only this summary; we do not know its clauses, formulas, specimen dimensions or conditioning conditions. Everything below concerning method names and points comes from the laboratories' entries in accreditation scopes, not from the standard.
STATUS (as of 06.11.2026). The card of PN-P-04613:1997 (Polish version) has no withdrawal label and no "Replaced by" line; the standard is on sale (file and paper). The previous edition PN-P-04613:1985 (Polish version), which it replaced, is listed on the card as a related product. On 06.11.2026 the PKN search returned a server error, so we did not review the list of all editions — we read the status from the card itself.
HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation scope database refreshed from the production server on 02.11.2026 and current PCA documents, read on 06.11.2026). Number 04613 appears in 8 records at 7 Polish laboratories: AB 033, AB 154, AB 164 (two — two sites in Łódź: ul. Brzezińska 5/15 and ul. Gdańska 118), AB 198, AB 225, AB 403, AB 1417. In the current PCA documents of these 7 laboratories the standard occurs 8 times in total — as many as in the copy; no entry is suspended. Always with the year: "PN-P-04613:1997" — without a point (AB 154, AB 198), "p. 3.4" or "pkt 3.4" (AB 033, AB 164, AB 225), "pkt. 3.2, 3.4" (AB 403) and "p. 2.2" (AB 1417). There are no other notations in the copy (e.g. without the zero, "PN-P 04613") — we searched for the string "4613" in all countries: 8 records, the same ones. There are no Czech or other foreign entries. The "Laboratories" tab ("PN-P-04613") shows 7 laboratories — the same ones (tab query on labcoda.pl, 06.11.2026).
WHAT THE LABORATORIES TEST (PCA documents, complete entries). Areal mass, method E: knitted fabrics — point 3.4 (AB 164, at both sites), knitted and stitch-bonded fabrics — point 3.4 (AB 225), knitted fabrics — p. 2.2 (AB 1417). Areal mass, gravimetric method: textiles — knitted and stitch-bonded fabrics, nonwovens, flat textiles — p. 3.4, in one entry with PN-EN ISO 9073-1:2023-11; in the next row the same characteristic "by the small-sample method" according to PN-EN 12127:2000 (AB 033). Linear and areal mass: knitted fabrics (AB 198, without a point and without a method name); flat textiles — in one entry with PN-ISO 3801:1993, PN-EN 12127:2000 and PN-EN ISO 9073-1:2023-11 (AB 154); indirect method — points 3.2 and 3.4, in the block of test objects "flat textiles, knitted fabrics, woven fabrics, textile products" (AB 403; right next to it linear and areal mass by the indirect method according to PN-ISO 3801:1993 points 6.3, 6.5, 6.7). No entry gives a measuring range or unit. For woven fabrics the same laboratories cite PN-ISO 3801:1993 (e.g. AB 225 — "method 5 — small specimen", point 6.7; AB 1417), for nonwovens — PN-EN ISO 9073-3:2023-11 (AB 225) or PN-EN ISO 9073-1:2023-11 (AB 033, AB 154), and for the "small-sample method" — PN-EN 12127:2000 (AB 033, AB 154, AB 164, AB 403, AB 1417; a separate entry in this database on areal mass from small samples). At AB 1417 knitted fabrics have both routes in the scope: areal mass by "method E" according to PN-P-04613:1997 p. 2.2 and by the "small-sample method" according to PN-EN 12127:2000 (knitted fabrics, woven fabrics, nonwovens).
WHERE A SEEMINGLY CORRECT RESULT IS EASY TO GET. First — which point of the standard: the same name "method E" appears at AB 164 and AB 225 with point 3.4, and at AB 1417 with point 2.2; AB 403 cites points 3.2 and 3.4 as the "indirect method". Without the text of the standard we cannot decide whether these are different methods or different numbers of the same one — the test report must cite the point, and when comparing results of two laboratories, check whether they cite the same one. Second — which quantity: "linear mass" (per unit length) and "areal mass" (per unit area) are two different numbers in different units; entries "linear and areal mass" do not say which of them the test report gives. Third — which document: for the same characteristic laboratories cite PN-P-04613 for knitted fabrics, and for woven fabrics and nonwovens — PN-ISO 3801 and PN-EN ISO 9073-1 or -3; PN-EN 12127 ("small-sample method") is cited for flat textiles, also for knitted fabrics (AB 1417). The areal mass of the same knitted fabric may therefore come from two different standards — a result from a combined entry (AB 033, AB 154) or from a laboratory with two routes (AB 1417) must be read together with the standard stated in the test report. Fourth — the age of the standard: 1997 edition; whether its conditioning and weighing conditions agree with the newer standards cited alongside, we cannot say without the text.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We did not have the text of PN-P-04613:1997: apart from the summary on the PKN card we do not give the wording of the scope of application of the methods, definitions, number and dimensions of specimens, conditioning conditions, weighing and calculation, units of the result or the content of points 2.2, 3.2 and 3.4. We do not know which of the four linear-mass methods and five areal-mass methods correspond to the names "method E", "gravimetric method" and "indirect method" in the scopes, nor what the correction factors are. We did not check in this entry the status of the standards cited alongside in the scopes (PN-ISO 3801:1993, PN-EN 12127:2000, PN-EN ISO 9073-1:2023-11, PN-EN ISO 9073-3:2023-11); we did not check references to PN-P-04613 in legislation.
Method principle
According to the PKN card, the standard gives four methods for determining linear mass (mass per unit length) and five methods for determining areal mass (mass per unit area) of knitted fabrics and stitch-bonded fabrics, in the non-conditioned and conditioned state, with correction factors. In accreditation scopes the methods are called "method E" (point 2.2 or 3.4), "gravimetric method" (point 3.4) or "indirect method" (points 3.2 and 3.4). We do not give the principles of calculation, specimen dimensions or weighing conditions — we did not have the text of the standard.
Applications
- Knitted fabrics and stitch-bonded fabrics — linear mass (four methods) and areal mass (five methods), non-conditioned and conditioned ("Scope" field of the PKN card)
- In accreditation scopes also: knitted and stitch-bonded fabrics, nonwovens and flat textiles — in combined entries with PN-EN ISO 9073-1, PN-ISO 3801 and PN-EN 12127
- In accreditation scopes: 7 Polish laboratories, 8 entries; without measuring range or unit

Health and safety (OHS)
- TECHNICAL NOTE: "method E" appears in scopes once with point 3.4 and once with point 2.2 — when comparing results, check the cited point
- TECHNICAL NOTE: linear mass and areal mass are two different quantities — an entry "linear and areal mass" does not say which one was reported
Frequently asked questions
Which standard describes this test?
The test is performed according to PN-P-04613:1997 (Polish version) — “Textiles — Knitted fabrics and stitch-bonded fabrics — Determination of linear and areal mass”.
How does this method work?
According to the PKN card, the standard gives four methods for determining linear mass (mass per unit length) and five methods for determining areal mass (mass per unit area) of knitted fabrics and stitch-bonded fabrics, in the non-conditioned and conditioned state, with correction factors. In accreditation scopes the methods are called "method E" (point 2.
What is the measuring range and accuracy?
