Testing of enclosure protection degree against ingress of solid objects (dust) and water. IP classification (e.g., IP65, IP67, IP68) according to PN-EN 60529.
Overview
IP protection degree (Ingress Protection) is an international classification system specifying the effectiveness of an enclosure in protecting equipment against access to hazardous parts, ingress of solid objects (including dust), and ingress of water. The PN-EN 60529 standard (implementation of IEC 60529) defines test methods and requirements for each protection degree.
The IP code consists of the letters "IP" and two digits: the first digit (0β6) specifies protection against solid objects and dust, the second digit (0β9) β protection against water. For example, IP65 means complete dust-tightness (6) and protection against water jets from any direction (5), and IP68 β dust-tightness (6) and protection against continuous immersion (8).
IP testing is required for a wide range of products: electrical and electronic equipment, luminaires, motors, switchboards, connectors, sensors, operator panels, and many others. In automotive, the extended standard ISO 20653 is used with additional IP classes (e.g., IP6K9K β protection against pressure washing). IP degree is a key specification parameter, especially for equipment operating outdoors or in harsh environmental conditions.
Dust-tightness testing is performed in special dust chambers with talc maintained in air suspension, while water-tightness testing β using dripping devices, spray nozzles, jets, or immersion tanks. Each degree has strictly defined test parameters: duration, pressure, flow rate, water temperature, and immersion depth.
Method principle
Dust-tightness testing (IP5X/IP6X): Test enclosure is placed in dust chamber where talc powder with grain size <75 Β΅m is maintained in suspension at concentration 2 kg/mΒ³. Vacuum (negative pressure) is created inside enclosure, causing air flow through gaps β flow volume = 80Γ enclosure volume, not more than 60 vol./h. After 2β8 hours of test, enclosure is opened and dust ingress is visually assessed. IP5X β limited ingress permissible (not affecting operation), IP6X β zero ingress. Water-tightness testing: For individual degrees, different methods are used: IPX1/X2 β drops from calibrator, IPX3/X4 β spray from oscillating tube or nozzles, IPX5/X6 β water jet from 6.3β12.5 mm nozzle (12.5β100 L/min), IPX7 β immersion 1 m / 30 min, IPX8 β continuous immersion according to manufacturer specification, IPX9 β pressure washing 80β100 bar / 80Β°C.

Step-by-step procedure
1. Determining required IP degree
Based on product standard or customer specification, determine required IP degree (e.g., IP65). Identify first digit (dust-tightness) and second (water-tightness).
2. Sample preparation
Close enclosure in ready-to-use state. Protect cable openings with blanking plugs. Place water/dust ingress indicators inside.
3. Dust-tightness test IP5X/IP6X
Place enclosure in dust chamber. Connect vacuum. Start talc circulation (2 kg/mΒ³). Test time: IP5X β 2 h, IP6X β 8 h.
4. Dust-tightness assessment
After test, remove enclosure. Open and visually assess dust ingress. IP5X β limited ingress OK (does not affect operation). IP6X β zero ingress.
5. Water-tightness test β spray (IPX3/X4/X5/X6)
Set up appropriate spray system. IPX5: Γ6.3 mm nozzle, 12.5 L/min, distance 2.5β3 m, time 3 min per mΒ² (min. 3 min). Spray from all directions.
6. Water-tightness test β immersion (IPX7/X8)
Immerse enclosure in water tank to depth 1 m (IPX7) for 30 min. Water temperature Β±5Β°C from enclosure temperature. For IPX8 β according to manufacturer specification.
7. Water-tightness assessment
Remove enclosure. Open and check water ingress indicators. Assess whether water has entered in quantity endangering device operation or safety.
8. Post-test inspection (optional)
Check electrical insulation of device after water test (according to product standard). Perform insulation resistance or dielectric strength test.
9. Documentation and report
Prepare report with: sample identification, test parameters, results (pass/fail), photos, IP code. Issue certificate or test report.
