Overview

WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. We read the text of the standard in two iTeh samples: SIST EN ISO 11202:2010 (English text) — title page, European foreword and Annex ZA of EN ISO 11202:2010 — and ISO 11202:2010 (English text) — from the title page through the contents, foreword, introduction and Clauses 1–2 to term 3.24 (approximate apparent work station directivity index) on page 8. Outside the samples remain instrumentation (4), procedures to determine the local environmental correction K3A (5), test environment (6), measured and determined quantities (7, 8), mounting and operation of the machine (9), microphone positions (10), measurements (11), uncertainty (12), information to be recorded (13), test report (14) and Annexes A (determination of K3, normative), B (background noise criteria in bands), C (uncertainty), D (principles of the methodology) and E (example of a test table). We did not read amendment A1 (ISO 11202:2010/Amd 1:2020).

ACCORDING TO THE TEXT OF ISO 11202:2010 AND THE FOREWORD OF EN ISO 11202:2010. The standard was prepared by ISO/TC 43 “Acoustics”, Subcommittee SC 1 “Noise”, in collaboration with CEN/TC 211 “Acoustics” (secretariat DS); CEN approved EN ISO 11202:2010 on 22.04.2010 without modification to ISO; it superseded EN ISO 11202:2009; Annex ZA relates it to the essential requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. The second edition replaces the first (ISO 11202:1995) as a technical revision. Introduction: the standard belongs to the ISO 11200–11205 series (method choice guided by ISO 11200) and gives a method for determining emission sound pressure levels at a work station and at other specified positions in situ; it differs from ISO 11201 by determining and applying a local environmental correction, and from ISO 11204 by determining the directivity of the machine’s sound radiation approximately with fewer measurement positions or even no additional measurement; the acoustic properties of the room are determined to qualify the environment and to determine the correction; results are of accuracy grade 2 (engineering) or 3 (survey); two procedures for the local correction are given — the first (A.1) assumes that the sound at the work station comes from a well-defined part of the machine visible from the work station with free propagation, and requires only a measurement at the work station and an acoustic qualification of the room; the second (A.2) is generally applicable — no assumptions on directivity or source location are needed, as directivity is determined by an approximate method with a few additional positions, and the approximate character is taken into account in qualifying the accuracy grade; emission levels are generally less than or equal to those when the machine operates in its normal surroundings, and commonly observed differences are 1–5 dB (calculation of the level in a room — ISO/TR 11690-3). Scope (1): a method for determining the emission sound pressure levels of machinery and equipment at a work station and at other specified positions in situ; the work station is occupied by an operator and may be in open space, in the room with the machine, in a cab fixed to the machine or in an enclosure remote from it; specified positions may be near the work station or near an attended or unattended machine (bystander positions); A-weighted levels, if required in bands and C-weighted peak; methods are given for determining a local environmental correction (subject to a specified limiting maximum value) applied to the measured levels to eliminate the influence of reflecting surfaces other than the plane on which the machine stands — based on the equivalent sound absorption area of the room and the radiation characteristics (source location or directivity towards the work station); accuracy grade 2 or 3; corrections for background noise and for the acoustic environment; instructions on mounting and operating the machine and choosing microphone positions; purposes include comparison of units of a machine family; data can be used for declaring and verifying emission values according to ISO 4871; all types of noise according to ISO 12001 and all types and sizes of sources; any room meeting the prescribed requirements may be used, which are less strict than those of ISO 11201, particularly regarding the acoustic quality of the environment; work stations near the machine, in a cab, in an enclosure, surrounded by the machine, bystander positions, other positions and the operator’s path. HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation scope database, load up to 17.09.2026, read on 03.10.2026). The number 11202 appears in 6 records at 5 laboratories: AB 082, AB 665, AB 838, AB 861, AB 1340. In the current PCA documents (read on 03.10.2026, issues from 02.09.2025 to 04.08.2026) the number appears in 5 items — one at each laboratory (7 text lines, because at AB 838 and AB 861 the item lists the standard and amendment A1:2021-10 on separate lines); in each of the five documents the number of page markers equals the number of PDF pages, without repetitions; a search of all 1291 PCA documents downloaded from BIP on 03.10.2026 found no laboratories outside the database copy (17 laboratories on the list have no link to a scope document on BIP). Forms: “PN-EN ISO 11202:2012” (AB 082), “PN-EN ISO 11202:2012” with “PN-EN ISO 11202:2012/A1:2021-10” (AB 861, and at AB 838 additionally “excluding clause 12”, i.e. without the uncertainty clause), “PN-EN ISO 11202:2012+A1:2021-10” (AB 1340) and “PN-EN ISO 11202” without year (AB 665). None of these items is suspended (in the AB 1340 document the word “zawieszenia” refers to equipment components, not suspension of accreditation). The “Laboratories” tab (term “PN-EN ISO 11202”) shows all 5 laboratories — checked with a tab query on the production server labcoda.pl on 03.10.2026.

WHAT THE LABORATORIES TEST (items in PCA). Object: machinery and equipment — noise (AB 838, AB 861, AB 1340; at AB 665 in the flexible scope of accreditation), machinery and equipment, machines and means of transport — noise (AB 082). Characteristics: A-weighted level, single event level, band levels (AB 082), acoustic properties — direct measurements (AB 665), equivalent and maximum A level, single event emission level (24–137) dB, C peak level (AB 838), sound pressure level — equivalent A level (20–136) dB, C peak (69–139) dB, direct method (AB 861), equivalent A level (23–137) dB, C peak (30–140) dB, emission level by calculation (AB 1340).

WHERE A SEEMINGLY CORRECT RESULT IS EASY TO GET. With the choice of standard: ISO 11202 is for in situ measurements with an environmental correction, ISO 11201 — for a free field without corrections, ISO 11204 — with directivity determined without this approximation (introduction). With the accuracy grade: this method gives grade 2 or 3, not 1 (1.1). With the K3 correction: it has a limiting maximum value and depends on the room absorption and the source directivity — procedure A.1 requires the assumption of a visible part of the machine radiating towards the work station to be met (introduction, 1.1). With directivity: the approximate character of its determination (fewer measurement positions) is taken into account when qualifying the accuracy grade of the result (introduction, 3.24). With interpretation: the emission level is usually 1–5 dB lower than the level in a real room (introduction).

WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We did not read the procedures for determining K3 and the limiting values of the correction, requirements for the room and background noise, instrumentation, microphone positions, measurement procedure, uncertainty or the report (Clauses 4–14, Annexes A–E), nor amendment A1:2020. We do not give permissible noise levels for machines.

Method principle

The machine is operated under specified conditions in situ, in a room meeting the requirements of the standard, and the sound pressure level at the work station and at other specified positions is measured. The result is corrected for background noise (K1) and by a local environmental correction K3 — determined from the equivalent sound absorption area of the room and the source location (A.1) or an approximate work station directivity index (A.2) — and given as the A-weighted emission sound pressure level (optionally in bands and C-weighted peak) in accuracy grade 2 or 3.
