🌿 Methyl acrylate in workplace air — adsorption of vapours on activated charcoal, desorption with carbon disulphide, gas chromatography; MAC (NDS) 14 mg/m³, STEL (NDSCh) 28 mg/m³, "skin" notation; PN-Z-04113-05:1986 (withdrawn 17-10-2011)
In short
Polish standard of 1986 with a method for determining methyl acrylate in workplace air: the vapours are adsorbed on activated charcoal, desorbed with carbon disulphide and analysed by gas chromatography; the PKN card gives no limit of quantification. The test is performed according to PN-Z-04113-05:1986; Ranges in accreditation scopes: from 0.120 mg/m³ (AB 1642) to 680 mg/m³ (AB 1642). The procedure comprises 4 steps; it is used for: Workplace air — methyl acrylate — in the current scopes of 6 laboratories, despite the withdrawal of the standard, Assessment of occupational exposure against the NDS of 14 mg/m³ and the NDSCh of 28 mg/m³, "skin" notation (Journal of Laws 2026 item 447, item 15 of the list).

Overview
WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. Scope from the PKN catalogue card, in full (our translation): "A method is given consisting in adsorption of methyl acrylate vapours on activated charcoal, desorption with carbon disulphide and chromatography of the solution obtained. The method is used for determining the concentration of methyl acrylate vapours in the air at workplaces. General guidelines, apparatus and instruments, the preparation of reagents and solutions, the operating conditions of the gas chromatograph, the preparation of the calibration curve and the determination of the desorption coefficient are laid down" (the Polish card contains a misspelling of the substance name and missing commas, which we do not reproduce in translation). The card gives no limit of quantification. We did not have the text of the standard (3 pages); the CIOP index of methods from 2000–2017 lists no article on methyl acrylate (searched on 04.10.2026; there is only "Methyl 2-cyanoacrylate").
NDS VALUES (list in the annex to the regulation of 26 March 2026, Journal of Laws 2026 item 447). Item 15: "Methyl acrylate [96-33-3]" — NDS 14 mg/m³, NDSCh 28 mg/m³, "skin" notation (according to footnote 4 of the list, absorption through the skin "may be as important as in exposure by inhalation").
STATUS (card as of 04.10.2026). The card of PN-Z-04113-05:1986 (Polish version) has the heading "Withdrawn": published 23-07-1986, withdrawal date 17-10-2011, 3 pages, price group B, Health, Environment and Medicine Sector, KT 159 Chemical and Dust Hazards in the Working Environment, ICS 13.040.30; the card does not name a replacing standard. The PKN search for "PN-Z-04113" (04.10.2026) shows the whole series "Tests for acrylic compounds content" (parts 00–12) labelled "Withdrawn"; the search for "akrylanu metylu" returns no current standard for methyl acrylate at workplaces — of current standards on acrylates it shows PN-Z-04570:2026-08 for ethyl acrylate and PN-Z-04384:2009 for methyl 2-cyanoacrylate.
HOW MANY LABORATORIES AND IN WHAT FORM (copy of the accreditation scope database, data load up to 17.09.2026, read on 04.10.2026). The number 04113-05 (with a hyphen, full stop or slash before the part number) appears in 6 records at 6 laboratories; in the current PCA documents (read on 03.10.2026; issues from 08.01.2026 to 28.07.2026 — all issued after the withdrawal of the standard) — in 6 rows at the same laboratories; a search of all PCA documents downloaded from the BIP found no laboratories outside the database copy; no item is suspended and no document repeats pages. Old form "PN-86/Z-04113/05" — AB 875, AB 1144 and AB 1207 (next to procedure PB-06A edition 7 of 20.01.2025); form "PN-Z-04113-05:1986" — AB 1168 and AB 882 (next to procedure PB-10 edition 1 of 31.08.2022); AB 1642 writes "PN-Z-04113-05:1989" — a year inconsistent with the card (1986), the same in the PCA document (issue no. 23 of 28.07.2026). "Laboratories" tab: "PN-86/Z-04113/05" shows 3 laboratories, "PN-Z-04113-05" — 3 (including AB 1642, because the query contains no year), 6 in total, the same in the copy and on the production server labcoda.pl (tab queries of 04.10.2026).
WHAT THE LABORATORIES TEST (database copy). Object: working environment — air, at some laboratories samples collected on sorbent tubes or a solid sorbent; at AB 1207 the object recorded in the copy also covers, besides the working environment, samples of ambient air and indoor air. Quantity: concentration (content) of methyl acrylate. Ranges in mg/m³: 0.120–680 (AB 1642), 0.50–480 (AB 1207, GC-MS), 0.530–272 (AB 1144), 1.0–100 (AB 875), 1.21–302 (AB 882, GC-MS), 1.39–178 (AB 1168). Technique: gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection (GC-FID) — 4 laboratories; gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC-MS) — AB 882 and AB 1207, according to in-house procedures PB-10 and PB-06A.
WHERE A SEEMINGLY CORRECT RESULT IS EASY TO GET. First — status: the standard has been withdrawn since 17-10-2011, and the PKN search shows no other standard for methyl acrylate; 6 laboratories have it in scopes issued in 2026 — the client should know that the result is produced according to a standard withdrawn from the PKN catalogue. Second — designation of the standard: at AB 1642 the year "1989" does not correspond to any edition in the PKN catalogue; a report copying this entry cites a document that does not exist. Third — limit of quantification: the card does not give it; with an NDS of 14 mg/m³ the bottom limits of the laboratories (from 0.120 to 1.39 mg/m³) lie below 10 % of the NDS, but they cannot be compared with the standard. Fourth — detector: the GC-MS items (AB 882, AB 1207) are performed according to in-house procedures, with the standard next to them. Fifth — skin and NDSCh: a measurement in air does not cover absorption through the skin; WE DO NOT GIVE the measurement conditions against the NDSCh of 28 mg/m³.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We did not have the text of the standard — we do not give the volume or flow rate of air sampling, the type of tube and mass of charcoal, the column, chromatograph conditions, the desorption coefficient, the limit of quantification or calculations, although according to the card the standard contains them. We do not claim that another standard has replaced PN-Z-04113-05:1986 — PKN names none.
Method principle
Methyl acrylate vapours from workplace air are adsorbed on activated charcoal, desorbed with carbon disulphide, and the solution obtained is analysed by gas chromatography with a calibration curve and a desorption coefficient (PKN card); the result in mg/m³ is compared with the NDS of 14 mg/m³ and the NDSCh of 28 mg/m³. The card gives no limit of quantification. The standard is withdrawn (17-10-2011); WE DO NOT GIVE details — we did not have the text of the standard.
