GUM puts a quantum Hall resistance standard into operation
The DC Electrical Quantities Laboratory team at Poland’s Central Office of Measures (GUM) has put a new quantum Hall resistance (QHR) system into operation. It uses the quantum Hall effect, which allows the unit of resistance to be realised from fundamental constants, independently of classical artefact standards.
- The system operates at temperatures from about 1.3 K to 300 K and allows measurements in magnetic fields of up to 9 T.
- It is prepared for modern quantum Hall structures, including graphene samples, which are expected to allow the system to be developed further.
- According to GUM, the new infrastructure strengthens the realisation, maintenance and dissemination of the unit of resistance and the development of calibration methods for high-end measuring instruments.
- The system also opens the way to international research projects and key comparisons, as well as research and development in quantum metrology.
