Pellets, briquettes and straw under quality control — a mandatory test certificate
On 15 September 2026 the Polish government adopted a bill extending the fuel quality monitoring system to solid biofuels. Whoever places them on the market will have to test the fuel and issue a quality certificate.
- The bill (reference UD186) covers wood pellets, agropellets, wood and non-wood briquettes, wood chips, firewood and straw used for heating buildings.
- Quality requirements are to follow the EN ISO 17225 series — class A is indicated for non-wood pellets and class A1 for non-wood briquettes.
- For fuel and biomass laboratories this means a steady flow of orders: moisture, ash content, calorific value, mechanical durability and the nitrogen, sulfur and chlorine content.
- Market checks will be run by the Trade Inspection and, on import, by the National Revenue Administration; the bill also sets out sampling, test methods and penalties.
