Whole grain gets a single definition and technical criteria

ISO 20810:2026 sets a global definition of whole grain and requirements for packaging, labelling and claims for whole-grain products.

Until now "whole grain" meant different things in different countries, which hampered both trade and the checking of on-pack claims.
The standard gives technical criteria and a way of calculating whole-grain content in a product, not merely a dictionary definition.
For a food laboratory it is a reference point when verifying a producer declaration — there is now something to compare the result against.
The document covers cereals and selected pseudocereals, so it also applies to products made from buckwheat, quinoa or amaranth.
