ISO 24914:2026 — general requirements for LAMP in the microbiology of the food chain
On 13 January 2026 ISO published ISO 24914:2026 (edition 1, 16 pages, committee ISO/TC 34/SC 9). It specifies general requirements and definitions and gives guidance for the development and application of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) to detect microorganisms and associated genetic markers, e.g. antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence genes.
- The standard applies to all LAMP methods and platforms and to items from the food chain: products intended for human consumption, animal feed, environmental samples from food and feed production and handling, and samples from primary production.
- It does not cover the use of LAMP for quantification, nor the validation and verification of LAMP methods as alternative or reference methods — these are described in the ISO 16140 series and ISO 17468.
- The PCR counterpart is ISO 22174 (general requirements and definitions for PCR detection and quantification of microorganisms), while general requirements for isothermal methods including LAMP for molecular biomarker analysis are given in ISO 22942-1.
- Work started with the approval of the project on 21 February 2024; the DIS enquiry closed on 8 July 2025 and the FDIS vote on 9 December 2025; the standard is available in English and French.
