The SI in machine-actionable form: the BIPM releases the first stable version of the SI Reference Point
The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) has presented the SI Reference Point — a digital knowledge model of the SI Brochure with persistent identifiers (PIDs) that lets software and devices use SI units consistently. Version 1.0.0, the first stable release, came out on 10 June 2026; a webinar presenting it took place on 20 July, and on 31 July the BIPM published the recording.
- The model was developed by an international group of experts working through the CIPM Forum on Metrology and Digitalization (FORUM-MD); version 1.0.0 was approved for publication at the 5th meeting of the Task Group on the SI Digital Framework (TG-SIDF).
- According to the BIPM, the SI Reference Point supports the interoperability and reuse of measurement information, digital metrological traceability, the harmonisation of digital calibration certificates and digital reference material certificates, consistent communication between measurement devices and sensor networks, and anchoring other systems for the digital representation of units of measurement.
- The webinar was aimed at people working on digital metrology, digital calibration and reference material certificates, digital quality infrastructure and standards; the speakers came from PTB, the BIPM and NPL.
- The BIPM publishes the scripts that generate the knowledge model in the public SI-Reference-Point-generation-scripts repository, where release v1.0.0 is described as the first stable version of the SI Reference Point.
