The world measurement system grows: Peru and Azerbaijan join the BIPM, the Dominican Republic and Armenia sign the CIPM MRA
The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) announced that Peru (11 August) and Azerbaijan (17 August 2026) became Member States under the Metre Convention, and that the national metrology institutes of the Dominican Republic (27 July) and Armenia (18 September) signed the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA).
- Peru had been an Associate of the General Conference on Weights and Measures since 28 May 2009; its institute INACAL has participated in the CIPM MRA since 17 November 2009 and, according to the BIPM, has declared 1492 calibration and measurement capabilities (CMCs) in the KCDB and taken part in 111 key and supplementary comparisons.
- Azerbaijan had been an Associate since 1 January 2015, and its Institute of Metrology (AzMI) has participated in the CIPM MRA since 28 January 2015. Full membership brings voting rights at the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) and participation in the scientific and technical work coordinated by the BIPM.
- The Dominican Republic first became a Member State in 1954, was excluded as from 1 January 2015 and acceded again to the Metre Convention on 9 April 2026; the CIPM MRA was signed by the Director General of INDOCAL. Armenia has been an Associate since 17 June 2026, and the arrangement was signed by the Acting Director of ARMSTANDARD.
- According to the BIPM, a CIPM MRA signatory can participate in international scientific comparisons, develop calibration and measurement capabilities (CMCs) and publish them in the KCDB; Member State status and participation in the CIPM MRA together enable a country to contribute fully to, and benefit from, the international measurement system.
