FSA: eggs from one Ukrainian business withdrawn and recalled — Salmonella Enteritidis found in samples, and whole genome sequencing linked the strain to 36 infections reported in England in 2026
On 10 October 2026 the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a Food Alert for Action (FSA-FAFA-03-2026) advising that eggs from one Ukrainian food business be withdrawn from the supply chain and recalled immediately. The eggs were supplied mainly to the catering sector through wholesalers, with some sold in small shops; they were not sold in large retailers such as supermarkets.
- Egg sampling was carried out as part of the ongoing investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis that is thought to be linked to imported eggs. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) found S. Enteritidis in samples of eggs from one Ukrainian supplier and carried out whole genome sequencing (WGS).
- According to UKHSA, the strain from the eggs (designated t5.8998) is genetically different from the strains linked to the outbreak under investigation, but is associated with 36 Salmonella cases reported in England in 2026. In England all Salmonella detected from patients seen in hospitals or primary care are routinely analysed by WGS, which helps to identify and investigate potential outbreaks.
- The FSA advises that anyone who has bought the affected eggs should not eat them but dispose of them; businesses should withdraw them and, where retail sales have occurred, recall them. The agency stresses that eggs produced in the UK, including those sold in major supermarkets, are not affected.
- Advice for eggs not covered by the alert is unchanged: eggs that are thoroughly cooked and handled hygienically should not present a food safety risk, and infants, young children, pregnant people and older adults should only eat raw or lightly cooked eggs if they carry the British Lion mark or are produced under the Laid in Britain scheme. The FSA is working with local authorities to ensure the alert is actioned swiftly and with international partners in its ongoing investigation.
