LNE accredited by COFRAC for sound absorption measurement in a reverberation room to ISO 354, with results expressed to ISO 11654
On 1 September 2026 France’s national metrology and testing laboratory LNE announced that since August 2026 it has held COFRAC accreditation for measuring the sound absorption coefficient to ISO 354 and ISO 11654. The item appears in accreditation scope No 1-0606, revision 35, valid from 4 August 2026.
- In accreditation scope 1-0606 (revision 35) the item concerns building elements: the sound absorption coefficient αs or the equivalent sound absorption area A is determined from the corrected difference in reverberation times of a reverberation room with and without the test object. The reference method is NF EN ISO 354, and the standard for expressing results is NF EN ISO 11654.
- The item has flexible scope FLEX1: the laboratory is recognised as competent to apply the referenced methods and their later revisions. The accreditation confirms compliance with NF EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017.
- Sound-absorbing materials are used to control reverberation in the common areas of buildings, offices, schools, hospitals, restaurants, meeting rooms, public buildings and industrial premises, among others. According to LNE, the measurement gives manufacturers objective, standardised data for technical data sheets, product qualification, tenders and certification.
- LNE points out that results from an accredited laboratory are more readily recognised by clients, certification bodies, inspection offices and regulators, which reduces the risk of results being challenged and tests being repeated. The institute also calibrates sound and vibration measuring instruments and measures the noise of machinery and equipment.
