Refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function: standard EN 16838:2024 (refrigerated scooping cabinets and “pozzetto” for artisan gelato — classification, requirements and energy consumption testing) harmonised both for energy labelling 2019/2018 and for ecodesign 2019/2024
Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/533, published on 26 March 2025 and in force from the day of publication, publishes in the Official Journal the reference of standard EN 16838:2024 “Refrigerated display scooping cabinets and pozzetto for gelato — Classification, requirements, performance and energy consumption testing” — in Annex I for Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2018 (energy labelling) and in Annex II for Regulation (EU) 2019/2024 (ecodesign). CEN drafted it under the Commission’s request C(2022) 2764 of 2 May 2022 (M/582).
- Scope of the standard according to the EVS record: classification, construction requirements, performance and energy consumption testing of two kinds of appliances — gelato scooping cabinets, used for sale and display of artisan and self-made gelato, and “pozzetto”, used for sale of such gelato without any display function. The standard specifies test conditions and methods for checking that the requirements are met, marking, and the list of characteristics to be declared by the manufacturer.
- Edition: EN 16838:2024 has been valid in the Estonian standards catalogue since 15 November 2024 and replaces EN 16838:2019; ICS classification 97.130.20 (commercial refrigerating appliances). The EVS record links the standard to both acts: 2019/2018 (energy labelling of refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function) and 2019/2024 (ecodesign requirements for these appliances).
- Legal effect: compliance with a harmonised standard gives a presumption of conformity with the measurement and calculation requirements of the regulations from the date of publication of the reference — which is why the decision entered into force on the day of publication. The Commission together with CEN assessed the standard’s compliance with request M/582 and found that it meets the requirements of both regulations (recitals 4 and 5).
- For energy testing laboratories: it is the only harmonised standard in this decision for refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function that refers directly to scooping cabinets for gelato; an energy consumption test result according to EN 16838:2024 can serve both the energy label class (2019/2018) and the assessment of ecodesign requirements (2019/2024).
