Blast chillers and freezers: EN ISO 22042:2021 with amendment A1:2024 a harmonised standard for ecodesign from 26 January 2026; the manufacturer declares capacity, temperature cycle and energy consumption in kWh per kg of food
Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/151, published on 26 January 2026 and applicable from the day of publication, publishes in the Official Journal the reference of EN ISO 22042:2021 “Blast chillers and freezers for professional use — Classification, requirements and test conditions” as amended by EN ISO 22042:2021/A1:2024. CEN drew up the standard under standardisation request M/495 for Regulation (EU) 2015/1095.
- Conformity with the harmonised standard gives a presumption of conformity with the ecodesign requirements of Article 4 and Annex II to Regulation (EU) 2015/1095 from the date of publication of the reference. CEN adopted amendment A1:2024 at the Commission’s request (amendment letter No 1 to request M/495 of 2 October 2013), and the Commission together with CEN assessed that the amended standard meets that request.
- Under Regulation 2015/1095 a blast chiller or freezer is an insulated appliance intended primarily to rapidly lower the temperature of hot food below 10 °C (chilling) or below −18 °C (freezing). The regulation does not apply to blast appliances and blast rooms with a capacity above 300 kg of food or to continuous-process blast appliances with a conveyor belt.
- Since 1 July 2016 the manufacturer states in the instructions and on its website: the full-load capacity in kg of food, the standard temperature cycle (from what to what temperature and within how many minutes), energy consumption in kWh per kg of food per cycle, and the refrigerant type, GWP and charge — all to two decimal places. EN ISO 22042 itself sets out — as its title states — the classification, requirements and test conditions for these appliances.
- Where values in the technical documentation were obtained by design calculation or extrapolation from equivalent appliances, the documentation must include the details of those calculations and of the tests by which the manufacturer checked their accuracy. An “equivalent” blast cabinet is a model with the same technical, efficiency and performance characteristics sold under another commercial code by the same manufacturer.
