Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 493.94 (Yea-Sacc®, 4a1704) for dairy and fattening ruminants renewed until 16 February 2036: pour plates on CGYE agar to EN 15789, PCR identification to CEN/TS 15790; eye protection only for the prill form
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/168, published on 27 January 2026, renews until 16 February 2036 the authorisation of a preparation of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 493.94 (holder: All-Technology (Ireland) Limited, in 2014 Alltech France) as a gut flora stabiliser for ruminants for milk production or reproduction and ruminants for fattening (except lambs and sheep for fattening), and repeals Regulation (EU) No 1109/2014. In its opinion of 19 March 2025 EFSA found the additive still safe; the larger-prill form (Yea-Sacc® TS) does not irritate skin or eyes, the prill form (Yea-Sacc® C) irritates the eyes, and both are skin and respiratory sensitisers.
- Methods in the annex: enumeration — pour plate method on chloramphenicol glucose yeast extract agar (CGYE) to EN 15789; identification — PCR to CEN/TS 15790. The reference laboratory considered its earlier conclusions still valid. Additive: at least 1 × 10⁹ CFU/g; minimum doses — 1 × 10⁷ CFU/kg complete feed for ruminants for milk production or reproduction and 1 × 10⁸ CFU/kg for young ruminants for fattening and ruminants for fattening. Respiratory and skin protection, and eye protection only when the additive is in prill form.
- Batches (EFSA, five of each form): 8.9 × 10⁹ CFU/g on average (7.0–12 × 10⁹), nine times above the minimum. Lead 0.009–0.020, cadmium 0.011–0.018, arsenic 0.126–0.322 mg/kg, mercury < 0.0017 mg/kg; ochratoxin A < 0.0005–0.0021 mg/kg, other mycotoxins below the LOD. Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes not detected in 25 g; E. coli, coliforms, sulphite-reducing anaerobes and moulds < 10 CFU/g, coagulase-positive staphylococci < 100 CFU/g.
- The forms differ only in granulometry: average particle size 620 µm (C) and 1562 µm (TS), no particles below 100 µm, Stauber-Heubach dusting potential 5–10 mg/m³. Homogeneity in dairy cow feed — CV 2.2 % (C) and 14.8 % (TS), in feed for cattle for fattening 2.67 % (TS). Bulk density 766–818 kg/m³.
- The strain was isolated from a British brewery; it is also deposited as NCYC 1026. Genome sequence: ANI 99.4 % with the S. cerevisiae S288C reference genome and above 98 % with other strains of the species, phylogenomic analysis of the core genome (82.2 % of gene sequences) — this confirmed the applicability of the QPS approach. The additive consists of the yeast only; no incidents have been reported since authorisation. Efficacy was not assessed.
