EU report on agri-food fraud suspicions for August 2026: 165 suspicions in 665 iRASFF notifications, 45 of them in dietetic foods, food supplements and fortified foods
On 24 September 2026 the European Commission published its monthly report on agri-food fraud suspicions for August 2026. From 665 iRASFF notifications, 165 non-compliances with fraud suspicions were retrieved; they are not confirmed frauds but signals that trigger investigations by the competent authorities.
- Most suspicions concerned dietetic foods, food supplements and fortified foods (45), followed by fruits and vegetables (14), non-alcoholic beverages (13) and cereals and bakery products (10). By fraud category, 87 cases were other non-compliances (implicit claim violations), 43 product tampering and 35 record tampering.
- Market controls detected most cases (92), followed by border controls (25), consumer complaints (19) and media monitoring (18). The examples of product tampering include laboratory findings: water added to chicken meat (water/protein ratio from 3.61 to 4.48) and to frozen shrimps (5.7), meat content of 75.4% and 78.4% instead of the declared 94% in chicken sausages, and egg pasta with 11.3% egg instead of 20%.
- Foreign amylases (from Aspergillus oryzae, in one case also Saccharomyces cerevisiae) were found in honey, and no measurable thixotropic behaviour in organic Manuka honey. The report also lists, among others, undeclared carbon monoxide in frozen tuna (420 µg/kg), ethylene oxide in raspberries (0.03 and 0.05 mg/kg), 3-methoxy-1,2-propanediol (3-MPD) in wine (0.33 mg/l) and undeclared irradiation of food supplements.
- The report is meant to help Member States’ authorities organise the risk-based controls required by Article 9(2) of Regulation (EU) 2017/625, and the agri-food sector to assess vulnerability to fraud. It covers food, feed, food contact materials, the welfare of farmed animals, and plant protection products and veterinary medicinal products insofar as they end up as residues and contaminants in food and feed.
