Pediococcus acidilactici NCIMB 30005, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei NCIMB 30151 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum DSM 16627 for silage renewed until 19 November 2035: minimum raised from 1 × 10⁷ to 2.5 × 10¹⁰ CFU/g, pediococci on MRS agar to EN 15786; citrinin in the additives 564–952 µg/kg — EFSA recommends monitoring
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/2176, published on 30 October 2025, renews until 19 November 2035 the authorisations of three preparations of lactic acid bacteria as silage additives for all animal species and repeals Regulation (EU) No 849/2014. In three opinions (15 October and 26 November 2024, 28 January 2025) EFSA found them still safe and potential sensitisers, did not conclude on eye irritation for lack of data, and noted that the citrinin values are high and deserve attention and monitoring during production.
- Methods in the annex: identification of each strain — DNA sequencing or PFGE (CEN/TS 17697); enumeration — P. acidilactici (1k21013) by spread plate on MRS agar to EN 15786, L. paracasei (1k20748) and L. plantarum (1k20749) by spread plate or pour plate on MRS agar to EN 15787. Each additive: at least 2.5 × 10¹⁰ CFU/g, minimum dose without other micro-organisms 5 × 10⁷ CFU/kg fresh plant material; skin, eye and respiratory protection. Transitional period — labels from before 19 November 2026.
- The previous authorisation required only 1 × 10⁷ CFU/g; the applicant declared 2.5 × 10¹⁰ CFU/g and EFSA recommended entering that value. Five batches: P. acidilactici 5.9 × 10¹¹ CFU/g on average (3.4–8.4 × 10¹¹), L. paracasei 4.7 × 10¹¹ (3.0–6.4 × 10¹¹), L. plantarum 4.31 × 10¹¹ (2.32–6.60 × 10¹¹). Cryoprotectants: sucrose, skimmed milk and glycerine, carriers — anhydrous dextrose or maltodextrin.
- Mycotoxins in three batches of each additive: citrinin — L. paracasei 564.2–692.3 µg/kg, P. acidilactici 604–684 µg/kg, L. plantarum 806.4–952.0 µg/kg; zearalenone 70.5–78.0, 33–39 and 28.2–57.9 µg/kg respectively; ochratoxin A 2.9–3.6 (L. paracasei) and 3.0–3.9 µg/kg (L. plantarum); aflatoxins up to 1.3 µg/kg (P. acidilactici) and 0.9 µg/kg in one L. plantarum batch. DON and fumonisins below the LOD. Coliforms in the pediococcus additive — 190–300 CFU/g.
- All MICs at or below the cut-off values — except chloramphenicol for L. paracasei (8 against 4 mg/l, one dilution, of no concern); resistance genes were checked in the NCBI and ResFinder databases — no hits of concern. No data on dusting potential were submitted (EFSA considered data on premixtures with other strains not relevant); for stability the data from the 2014 opinion apply. Efficacy was not assessed.
