Inhibited fertilisers: 14 of 21 samples with declaration failures
A market surveillance campaign tested 21 fertilisers from the markets of Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Poland and Slovenia. Fourteen samples either lacked the required label information or declared inhibitor content different from the actual one.
- The checks covered declarations of nitrification and urease inhibitors — additives that limit nitrogen losses and emissions from fertilisation.
- Non-compliance was found in 14 of 21 samples, two thirds of the set; manufacturers had to submit corrective actions or technical documentation justifying the analytical deviations.
- The Commission notes that inaccurate labelling raises farming costs; in parallel some 120 harmonised standards for CE-marked fertilisers are being developed with a EUR 10 million budget.
