Machinery Directive: 16 harmonised standards in one decision — including EN 81-44:2024 (lifting appliances in wind turbines), EN 12978:2024 (protective devices for power operated doors and gates — requirements and test methods), EN 17942:2024 (oxy-fuel gas welding); 11 old editions drop out on 20 January 2027
Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/1740, published on 14 August 2025, enters in the list of harmonised standards for Directive 2006/42/EC (Implementing Decision (EU) 2023/1586) five new standards, nine revised ones and two consolidated with amendment A1. The deletion of 11 existing rows applies from 20 January 2027 to give manufacturers time to adapt their machinery. In the Polish version the annex refers to “Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/1586”, in the English version to the Implementing Decision.
- New standards: EN 81-44:2024 (lifting appliances in wind turbines, row 5a), EN 17677:2024 (craft bakery and pastry depositors — safety and hygiene, 572a), EN 17942:2024 (thermoprocess equipment with open firing oxy-fuel gas welding equipment, 573a), EN 50059:2025 (hand-held electrostatic application equipment for non-ignitable liquid coating materials, 619a) and EN 50176:2025 (automatic electrostatic application systems for ignitable liquid coating materials, 619b).
- Revisions replacing old editions: EN 81-31:2024 (accessible goods-only lifts; was 2010), EN 81-41:2024 (vertical lifting platforms for persons with impaired mobility; 2010), EN 1846-2:2024 (firefighting and rescue service vehicles; 2009+A1:2013), EN 1953:2025 (application equipment for coating materials; 2013), EN 12077-2:2024 (limiting and indicating devices of cranes; 1998+A1:2008), EN 12159:2024 (builders hoists for persons and materials with vertically guided cages; 2012), EN 12312-4:2024 (passenger boarding bridges; 2014), EN 12621:2025 (machinery for supply and circulation of liquid coating materials; 2006+A1:2010), EN 12978:2024 (2003+A1:2009). Consolidated: EN 12312-5:2021+A1:2025 (aircraft fuelling equipment) and EN 13684:2018+A1:2024 (pedestrian-controlled lawn aerators and scarifiers).
- EN 12978:2024 according to the EVS record (valid from 31 December 2024, replacing EVS-EN 12978:2003+A1:2009): requirements and test methods for sensitive protective equipment placed on the market separately as safety components for power operated industrial and garage doors, gates and barriers, pedestrian doors and entrance control equipment; the safe function of the combination with the door is covered by EN 12453. The standard is not intended for ultrasonic, radar, capacitive, inductive, passive infrared and vision-based devices — for them it can serve only as a guide.
- Dates: the decision entered into force on the day of publication, so the new editions confer a presumption of conformity from 14 August 2025; the old ones (rows 2, 4, 157, 177, 277, 282, 291, 292, 330, 366 and 433) stay on the list until 20 January 2027. All the standards were drafted under standardisation request M/396 of 19 December 2006, and the Commission together with CEN and CENELEC found that they meet the safety objectives of Directive 2006/42/EC.
