Peracetic acid disinfectants for veterinary hygiene: Union authorisation for the ‘PAA based disinfectants - BPF2’ family — 1.25 to 25 % v/v, also at 4 °C, and re-entry only below 0.5 mg/m³ peracetic acid
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/2406 of 30 October 2026, published in the Official Journal of the EU on 3 November 2026, grants ITW Novadan ApS Union authorisation No EU-0036848-0000 for a biocidal product family based on peracetic acid for product-type 3 (veterinary hygiene), valid from 23 November 2026 to 31 October 2036. The summary of product characteristics sets concentrations and contact times for each use — from disinfecting animal housings and animal transport vehicles to boot dips — and the airborne concentration below which a room may be re-entered.
- The family covers soluble concentrates with 1.5–5 % (w/w) peracetic acid, 18–24.4 % hydrogen peroxide and 4.5–12.9 % acetic acid (plus etidronic acid and amine oxides) in two sub-groups: foaming concentrates with 1.5 % peracetic acid and concentrates with 5 %. The application was submitted on 30 September 2021, the products were evaluated by the German competent authority and the ECHA Biocidal Products Committee adopted its opinion on 25 February 2026; only industrial and professional users may use them.
- Uses: disinfection of empty animal housings and the interior of animal transport vehicles, the outside of vehicles including tyres, equipment by dipping and boots in dip baths — by low-pressure foaming, mopping or spraying, manually or automated. The claimed activity depends on concentration and contact time: indoors from 1.25 % v/v for 5 minutes (bacteria and yeasts) to 6–8 % v/v for 30 minutes (bacteria, yeasts, fungi and viruses), 4 % v/v for 60 minutes on porous surfaces (bacteria, yeasts and viruses), 6 % v/v (spraying) or 25 % v/v (foam) for 5 minutes on the outside of vehicles, with separate concentrations given for 4 °C.
- Re-entry is allowed only when inhalation exposure is below the Acceptable Exposure Concentration (AEC) — 0.5 mg peracetic acid/m³ and 1.25 mg hydrogen peroxide/m³ — or a lower national value, ensured by technical and organisational measures such as a sensor or a defined ventilation period. Foaming and spraying indoors require at least 3 air changes per hour (10 for spraying vehicles) and respiratory protective equipment with an assigned protection factor (APF) of at least 10 (40 for spraying vehicles).
- In a boot dip for up to 15 pairs of boots, the required 1 672 ppm peracetic acid is maintained over an 8-hour working day if the bath starts with a 3.5 % v/v solution of the concentrate, corresponding to 1950 ppm; the bath is prepared fresh every day, and treated surfaces and equipment are rinsed with drinking water after application. Peracetic acid itself was approved for product-types 1–6 by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/672 from 1 October 2017 to 30 September 2027; because of the hydrogen peroxide content, authorisations are without prejudice to Regulation (EU) No 98/2013 on explosives precursors.
