Benzoic acid (VevoVitall) for pigs renewed until 2036: purity ≥ 99.9 %, phthalic acid and biphenyl ≤ 100 mg/kg each, determination by HPLC-UV under EN 17298
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1832 of 28 July 2026, published on 29 July, renews until 18 August 2036 the authorisation of benzoic acid (DSM Nutritional Products) as a zootechnical additive for weaned piglets, pigs for fattening, sows and minor porcine species — to improve performance and to lower urine pH. It repeals four regulations: 2016/900, 2018/983, 2018/1550 and 2020/1031.
- Five batches: benzoic acid 99.99 % (by titration), phthalic acid 20.6 mg/kg (11–33), biphenyl 43.2 mg/kg (33–61), water 0.01–0.08 %. Elemental impurities (including Sb, As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg) together < 10 mg/kg, arsenic < 0.01 mg/kg, toluene < 14 mg/kg.
- Contents in complete feed: weaned piglets — 5000 mg/kg; performance of pigs for fattening — 3000–10 000 mg/kg; lowering of urine pH — pigs for fattening and sows 5000–10 000 mg/kg, minor porcine species 5000 mg/kg.
- Method: benzoic acid in the additive, premixtures and feed — HPLC-UV under EN 17298. The reference laboratory considered the evaluation of the method from the previous authorisation still valid; EFSA did not reassess efficacy because the conditions of authorisation have not changed.
- Complementary feed containing benzoic acid may not be fed as such — it must be thoroughly mixed with the rest of the daily ration; the additive is not combined with other sources of benzoic acid or benzoates. EFSA considered the acid irritant to skin, eyes and the respiratory tract; the additive and premixtures labelled before 18 February 2027 may be used up.
