Three new silage strains for all species: Lactococcus lactis DSM 34262 (1k2084), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum DSM 34271 (1k20763) and Loigolactobacillus coryniformis DSM 34345 (1k21801), at least 1 × 10⁸ CFU/kg fresh material; counting on MRS agar (ISO 15214 or EN 15787), identification by PFGE (CEN/TS 17697) or DNA sequencing; PEG 4000 up to 0.025 mg/kg silage
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/359, published on 24 February 2025, authorises the preparation of Lactococcus lactis DSM 34262 as a technological additive (silage additives) for all animal species until 16 March 2035. Like two acts published on 13 February 2025 — 2025/273 (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum DSM 34271) and 2025/277 (Loigolactobacillus coryniformis DSM 34345, both until 5 March 2035) — it relies on EFSA opinions of 26 June 2024: QPS species, identity established, no acquired antimicrobial resistance genes of concern.
- Specifications and methods: L. lactis DSM 34262 — at least 3 × 10¹¹ CFU/g additive, counted by pour plate on MRS agar according to ISO 15214; L. plantarum DSM 34271 — 4 × 10¹¹ CFU/g, L. coryniformis DSM 34345 — 2 × 10¹¹ CFU/g, both counted by spread (or pour) plate on MRS agar according to EN 15787. Identification of all three strains: pulsed-field gel electrophoresis PFGE according to CEN/TS 17697 or DNA sequencing methods. Minimum dose without other microorganisms: 1 × 10⁸ CFU/kg fresh material.
- Scope of use: L. lactis and L. plantarum only for easy and moderately difficult to ensile material (above 3 % and 1.5–3.0 % soluble carbohydrates in fresh matter, under Regulation 429/2008) — EFSA showed potential efficacy at 30–35 % dry matter; L. coryniformis — without restriction, as the EFSA trials covered grass with 22.4–34.7 % dry matter and 1.26–3.80 % soluble carbohydrates. If the preparation contains PEG 4000 as a cryoprotectant, its concentration may not exceed 0.025 mg/kg silage.
- Efficacy studies (EFSA): three trials each on grass in laboratory silos opened after 90 days; dry matter, pH, lactic and acetic acids, ethanol, ammonia-N and dry matter losses (corrected for volatiles) were determined, one-sided Mann–Whitney U test, P = 0.05. Preparations: freeze-dried with about 35–50 % active agent and 50–65 % cryoprotectants and carriers.
- Users: all three additives are potential skin and respiratory sensitisers, and any exposure through skin and respiratory tract is considered a risk; one formulation (with whey powder) was not irritant to skin or eyes, other formulations EFSA could not assess. Highest dusting potential: L. lactis 4,500 mg/m³, L. coryniformis 2,690 mg/m³, L. plantarum 255 mg/m³. The corrigendum to 2025/359 of 20 June 2025 concerns only the Finnish version.
