Methane emissions in the energy sector: EA and the European Commission prepare accreditation of verifiers — second workshop on 12 October
On 29 September 2026 the European co-operation for Accreditation (EA) announced a second workshop with the European Commission on Regulation (EU) 2024/1787 on the reduction of methane emissions in the energy sector. The regulation requires emission reports to be verified by verifiers accredited by national accreditation bodies (or otherwise authorised).
- Regulation 2024/1787 was published on 15 July 2024 and entered into force in August 2024; it aims to reduce methane emissions and leaks from fossil energy companies operating in the EU and in supply chains outside the Union.
- The act defines a verifier as a legal person accredited by a national accreditation body under Regulation (EC) No 765/2008, or a natural person otherwise authorised to carry out verification; the verifier reviews all data sources and methods used in the reports and assesses the reliability, credibility and accuracy of the data.
- At the workshop the Commission will give an update on the legal framework and the verification protocol, and EA national accreditation bodies will present the implementation of the regulation and their preparations for accrediting verifiers.
- The online workshop for EA national accreditation bodies is scheduled for 12 October 2026 (14:00–16:00 CEST); the first one took place on 3 June 2026.
