Minimum performance standards for data centres — consultation opened
On 21 September 2026 the European Commission opened a twelve-week consultation on minimum performance standards for data centres. Feedback is accepted until 14 December 2026, with a legislative proposal announced for Q2 2027.
- The initiative is run by the Directorate-General for Energy under the Energy Efficiency Directive.
- A data centre energy efficiency package was published alongside, including a common EU rating scheme and label — that means measurement and reporting under uniform rules.
- It affects data centre operators across the EU: energy use, emissions, load on electricity grids and cooling water.
