Guidance for emissions verifiers under the carbon border mechanism
The European Commission has issued guidance on verification and accreditation under the CBAM, addressed to verifiers and national accreditation bodies.
- The Commission document is dated 24 August 2026 and the European organisation of accreditation bodies announced it on 8 September.
- The guidance describes the roles and duties of verifiers and the rules of accreditation in the definitive period of the mechanism.
- The sectors covered are iron and steel, cement, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity and hydrogen.
- Verification of embedded emissions may be carried out only by independent bodies accredited under Regulation No 765/2008 by a national accreditation body, in Poland by the Polish Centre for Accreditation.
