EU CASP action: 17 of 25 child bicycle seats failed at least one requirement of EN 14344:2022 in laboratory tests
On 8 September 2026 the Czech Trade Inspection (ČOI) published the results of the EU CASP action on child bicycle seats for children weighing 9 to 22 kg. Twelve market surveillance authorities from 9 countries took part; 25 of the 28 models sampled were tested by an accredited laboratory in Nuremberg to EN 14344:2022.
- Authorities from Czechia, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Malta and Spain took part. The seats tested are mounted on bicycles and electrically power-assisted cycles with a cut-off speed of up to 25 km/h; samples were bought in physical shops and online. Three samples could not be laboratory-tested for technical reasons — only their marking, warnings and instructions were checked.
- Of the 25 seats tested in the laboratory, 17 (68%) failed at least one requirement of the standard. The most frequent issues concerned child restraint systems, mechanical strength and durability of the structure, sharp edges and protrusions, side protection and foot retention.
- Marking and instructions were deficient for 22 of 28 products (79%) — missing, among others, the maximum height and weight of the child, manufacturer details, mandatory warnings and complete assembly instructions. According to ČOI, 83% of products bought online and 50% of those bought in physical shops did not meet the requirements. In total 24 of 28 products (86%) were non-compliant; two were assessed as posing a serious risk and notified to Safety Gate. Both models sampled by ČOI passed the mechanical tests but had labelling deficiencies.
- According to the EVS catalogue, EN 14344:2022 has applied since 15 June 2022 (replacing the 2004 edition) and specifies requirements for cycle child seats, their attachment system and accessories for children weighing 9 to 22 kg who can sit unaided, mounted on bicycles and electrically power-assisted cycles up to 25 km/h according to EN 15194.
