ATEX: new edition of the standard for equipment using optical radiation — EN IEC 60079-28:2026 listed as harmonised
Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1967 (OJ of 4 September 2026) adds EN IEC 60079-28:2026 “Explosive atmospheres — Part 28: Protection of equipment and transmission systems using optical radiation” to the list of harmonised standards under Directive 2014/34/EU. The 2015 edition is removed from the list with effect from 4 March 2028.
- The new edition was drawn up under the Commission’s standardisation request; the Commission and CEN assessed its compliance with the request, and according to the decision the standard addresses the requirements of Annex II to Directive 2014/34/EU that it aims to cover.
- The withdrawal of the reference to EN 60079-28:2015 has been deferred to give manufacturers time to prepare for the new edition: row 81 of the list is deleted with effect from 4 March 2028, and EN IEC 60079-28:2026 is added as new row 81a.
- Compliance with a harmonised standard confers a presumption of conformity with the essential requirements from the date its reference is published in the Official Journal, so the decision — which amends Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/1668 — entered into force on the day of publication.
