ATEX: EN 14983:2024 (equipment and protective systems for firedamp drainage in underground mines) in the list of harmonised standards; the presumption of conformity from the 2007 edition expired on 1 October 2026
Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/597, published on 1 April 2025, enters in the list of harmonised standards for Directive 2014/34/EU (Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/1668) the standard EN 14983:2024 “Explosion prevention and protection in underground mines – Equipment and protective systems for firedamp drainage” as row 42a. It deletes row 42 with the EN 14983:2007 edition from 1 October 2026.
- Basis: standardisation request C(2023) 4798 of 20 July 2023 to CEN and CENELEC for Directive 2014/34/EU; on that basis CEN revised EN 14983:2007, and the Commission together with CEN assessed the new edition and found that it meets the requirements of Annex II to the Directive. Compliance with EN 14983:2024 confers a presumption of conformity with the essential requirements from the date of publication of the decision, which entered into force the same day.
- Transition: the deletion of row 42 (EN 14983:2007) was deferred to give manufacturers time to prepare for the new edition — point 1 of the annex applies from 1 October 2026. From that date only EN 14983:2024 confers a presumption of conformity with the ATEX Directive for equipment and protective systems for firedamp drainage.
- Scope according to the EVS-EN 14983:2024 record (valid from 1 November 2024, replacing EVS-EN 14983:2007; ICS group 73.100.20, assigned to Directive 2014/34/EU): requirements for equipment and protective systems for firedamp drainage at mines, including requirements for their construction and monitoring, with a reference to EN 1127-2:2014. The standard does not apply to firedamp utilisation systems beyond the utilisation shut-off device.
- For laboratories and notified bodies testing firedamp drainage equipment, the only reference conferring a presumption of conformity is now the 2024 edition; the decision does not list the technical differences between the 2007 and 2024 editions, and the EVS record gives only the scope.
