Alpha-galactosidase with xylanase (Capsozyme SB Plus) for weaned piglets — 20 GALU and 25 AXC per kg feed, enzyme activities measured by colorimetric methods
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/2079 of 17 September 2026, published on 18 September, authorises until 8 October 2036 an enzyme preparation from Aspergillus tubingensis ATCC SD 6740 and Trichoderma orientale CBS 139997 (Industrial Técnica Pecuaria) as a digestibility enhancer for weaned piglets. The additive was already authorised for poultry; the preparation has at least 50 AXC and 40 GALU per gram.
- Unit definitions: 1 AXC releases 0.058 micromoles of reducing sugars (as xylose) per minute from wheat arabinoxylan at pH 4.7 and 30 °C; 1 GALU hydrolyses one micromole of para-nitrophenyl-alpha-D-galactopyranoside per minute at pH 5.5 and 37 °C.
- Methods: xylanase is determined colorimetrically on a wheat arabinoxylan substrate (additive and premixtures) or an azo-xylan substrate (compound feed), alpha-galactosidase colorimetrically on para-nitrophenyl-alpha-D-galactopyranoside. The reference laboratory considered valid the evaluation of the methods from an earlier application, verified by EFSA on 19 March 2020.
- Efficacy was assessed in three 42-day trials (192, 112 and 504 piglets); a fourth was excluded because the feed contained antibiotic growth promoters, which does not reflect EU practice. Analysed activities in the feed were 19–25 GALU and 24–31 AXC per kg against intended 20 and 25.
- EFSA considered the additive a respiratory sensitiser; it could not conclude whether it irritates skin or eyes or sensitises the skin. The regulation sets a minimum content of 25 AXC and 20 GALU per kg of complete feed, with no maximum content.
