6-phytase from Trichoderma reesei CBS 126897 renewed and extended to ornamental birds, suckling piglets and other porcine species: activity in FTU determined colorimetrically according to EN ISO 30024, solid forms with a dusting potential of 0 mg/m³
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/91, published on 15 January 2026, renews until 4 February 2036 the authorisation of a preparation of 6-phytase from genetically modified Trichoderma reesei CBS 126897 (holder: AB Enzymes Finland) for poultry, weaned piglets, pigs for fattening and sows, extends it to ornamental birds, suckling piglets and minor porcine species and repeals Regulation (EU) No 292/2014. A corrigendum published on 11 August 2026 changes the description of the forms in the annex to “solid forms and liquid forms”.
- Method: 6-phytase in the additive, premixtures and compound feed is determined colorimetrically on the basis of the enzymatic reaction with phytate — EN ISO 30024. 1 FTU releases 1 µmol of inorganic phosphate per minute from sodium phytate at 37 °C and pH 5.5. Minimum activity of the additive: 5 000 FTU/g. The EU reference laboratory considered valid the conclusions of the method assessment for the previous authorisations.
- Minimum contents (FTU/kg complete feed): poultry other than reared for laying or breeding and ornamental birds 250, laying or breeding poultry 150, suckling and weaned piglets 500, pigs for fattening and sows 250. EFSA found the additive safe at 2 500 FTU/kg for poultry and 1 750 FTU/kg for pigs (tolerance trials assessed in 2013). According to the opinion the previous authorisation restricted use to feed with more than 0.23 % phytin-bound phosphorus and gave recommended maximum doses — the new annex contains no such provisions.
- EFSA data: four forms are on the market — two solid (Quantum Blue 5 G, granulated, and 40 P) and two liquid (5 L and 10 L), with applicant specifications of 5 000, 40 000, 5 000 and 10 000 FTU/g; the composition has changed since the first authorisation and batch results were kept confidential. Dusting potential of the solid forms 0 mg/m³ (Stauber-Heubach), particles below 63 µm 0.0004 % (5 G) and 9.7 % (40 P). Trichodermin was not detected in the enzyme concentrates, nor were viable cells or DNA of the strain; no data on peptaibols were provided.
- Users: all forms are respiratory sensitisers, but the solid forms are dust-free, so inhalation is unlikely; no conclusions on skin and eye irritation. The act requires respiratory protection. In the Polish version of recital 3 the new use is to fall under “technological additives”, while the English version and Article 2 refer to zootechnical additives. Under the old rules: additive and premixtures made before 4 August 2026, feed before 4 February 2027.
