Ecodesign moves into implementation: first product groups and the Digital Product Passport
The 2025–2030 working plan named the first product groups covered by ecodesign: textiles, furniture, tyres, mattresses, steel and aluminium. Each will carry a digital passport with data that has to be measured first.
- Ecodesign stops being about electricity use alone and now covers durability, repairability and what a product is made of.
- Implementation starts with textiles and clothing, furniture, tyres, mattresses and — as intermediate products — steel and aluminium.
- Horizontal requirements come alongside: ease of repair, availability of spare parts and minimum recycled content.
- The Digital Product Passport is to carry composition, durability and material origin, available to the buyer, the repair shop and the recycler.
- Demand grows for recycled content, resistance to ageing and use cycles and the strength of demountable joints.
- Implementing acts set the thresholds and methods group by group, and the date they apply is the date the work appears.
