China: international peer review of NIM in time and frequency and in thermometry
On 22 September 2026 China’s accreditation body CNAS reported that, together with the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP), it had carried out the annual international peer review of the National Institute of Metrology (NIM). The review covered calibration and measurement capabilities (CMCs) in time and frequency and in thermometry.
- The review took place on 15–17 September 2026 under Global ACI requirements; the team was led by a CNAS lead assessor and included experts from Singapore’s national metrology institute and the French joint metrology laboratory.
- According to CNAS, NIM’s timekeeping laboratory is the cornerstone of China’s time and frequency metrology system, and NIM holds the largest number of mutually recognised time and frequency CMCs in the world.
- According to CNAS, NIM’s radiation thermometry laboratory has raised the upper limit of unit realisation of China’s national high-temperature primary standard from 2200 °C to 2747 °C.
- The experts made suggestions on further establishing and improving calibration capabilities; CNAS describes the review as one of the key international assessments since the new global accreditation system was put in place.
